MY ORCHID PAGE  *
Phalaenopsis Carmela's Pixie
My first orchid, got as a seedling before I quite knew what to do with one... I waited 7 years for this one to bloom.  Not only did she need time to grow up, she probably wasn't happy on the shelf in the bathroom. We moved, she got to live on a south windowsill, & began blooming within 2 months; and has done so continuously since.
Doritaenopsis Minho Princess x King Shiang's Coral
Got on sale; marked down to $10 because it had finished blooming.  Having been neglected in the store, this one nearly died, losing all but one leaf.  A shot of rooting hormone & some TLC, & it now seems happy.  Orchids are so much tougher than people think.
Unknown Phalaenopsis
A rescuee from a building supply store.  P. Happy Girl...??
Ascocentrum ampullaceum
My 2nd orchid; mail-ordered, came in a pot full of  eensy earthworms & baby snails that climbed out each time I watered.  It bloomed once, & then took 4 years to repeat.  Not sure why...
Unknown Phalaenopsis
Another refugee from a large department store, whose plants are more usually dead.  This was the only one on the shelf, & in such good shape I couldn't believe it wasn't plastic.  A little voice called out to me as I passed... "Please take me home..."   Orchids are addictive!
Unknown dendrobium
Why do so many vendors sell these plants without names...?  This one had been lying bare-root on a table for so long that its newest canes were curved.  It also had 50% rotten roots.  Slightly, sweetly fragrant, & long-lasting blooms.
Oncidium (Makaii x Ornithorhynchum) Boso Sweet (?)
I think there must be a typo on the tag: "Ormithochynchum"??  Anyway, another rescuee from the aforementioned building supply store, which turned out to have NO good roots.  I cut off all the remaining buds (ouch!), & applied a lot of rooting powder & daily misting.  A few months later, it began recovering with new shoots.
Brassia New Start 'Galaxy'
The photo on the left does not do justice to the long spikes of very cool, spidery flowers.  The kitchen has a humid-greenhouse-y smell when this one is in bloom.  Getting way too big for its already-hard-to-water big pot.

Potinara Memoria Yoshi Tsubaki
Formerly known as Pot. Hisako Akatsuka 'Volcano Queen' x Blc. Jeremy Island 'Carmela'.  Whew.  Maybe unsure of its name, this one started a flower sheath, then sat for months doing nothing.  Finally the sheath turned brown & when I pried it open, there was the beginning of an eeny spike in the bottom.  It opened this, its first bloom, 5 years to the day I got it as a seedling.  It smells absolutely fantastic.
More pictures, from a mountain photography workshop...
