Conflict Resolution (Self Talk-Reminders)

Reminders:    Things you tell yourself before and during conflict to main self control.

Approaching the Situation:

bullet

Keep your breathing even.

bullet

What is it that I have to do?

bullet

Take one step at a time.

bullet

Stick to the issue and don't take it personally.

During the Confrontation:

bullet

Just exhale slowly.

bullet

Remember not to take it personally.

bullet

He/She might want me to get angry, but I'm going to one up him by staying cool.

bullet

What is the real issue? Keep it in perspective.

bullet

Just state your needs clearly.  Stick to "I" statements.  No blaming - that won't help.

bullet

Acknowledge his/her point.  That can help sometimes.

bullet

Getting real mad will cost me.  I'll be a champ.  Stay calm - be a clamp.

bullet

No one is right or wrong.  We just have different needs.

bullet

If there's nothing I can do now, just chill-out.  It will be over soon.  Ride the wave.
