Bangkok trip 2006

Out and about in Krungtep
(that's "Bangkok" to foreigners)
One of the sight-seeing we went to was the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute. This is the world's second oldest snake farm established to breed snakes for the production of antivenenes. The show is very educational and
I HIGHLY recommend anyone visiting
Bangkok to go and see it. Simon couldn't sit
on the stand so we had to sit at ground level
but it was a great place for taking photos.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Silom Road, situated on one of the older part of the city. The road is wide with a midian stip and lots of trees in the middle. The footpath is wide in most part and good enough for Simon to use (but can be bumpy and assistance is still required).  Going to tourist attractions by car is one thing but to be able to walk the streets was the best way to see Bangkok life as it really is and I think Simon really enjoyed that experience.
Left: One of the many signs around Bangkok explaining local significance of the place. This one tells that Silom road was "....constructed in 1851. ..name derives from silom (windmill) used for conveying water to rice fields found in the area at that time"
Above: One way of getting around was the monorail (BTS Skytrain) Here we are inside one. Nice and cool air condition inside - a relief from the day's heat.
Left:
Wheelchair access - Thailand style! To get to the lift (yellow arrow) to the skytrain, one has to use
              this steep ramp (red arrow).
This curb ramp runs up from
               a three lane motorway and
              there is NO curb ramp
               opposite on the other side
of the road to cross from.
               But we managed! (and
               that includes darting across
               three lane of traffic coming
               our way.)
Left: most of the footpaths are high so sometimes Simon has to walk along the road if there were no curb ramp to get across.
In front of the

Siam Paragon
shopping mall - one of
the newest place in
Bangkok. It was so
modern, it was the only
shopping centre we
found to have more than
ONE wheelchair accessible toilet in it! It is also where Siam Underwater  World is. My brother has been there and got some photos.  Click on his link on the HOME page to see his site.
The ferris wheel at Lumpini night bazaar - one of the newer attraction there.
Above: Surawong road - across this street is the lane way leading to where I used to live during my childhood. I couldn't take Simon there as we were already heading somewhere on this side of the
road. Anyway,
the exact spot
where my house
stood is now a
huge skyscraper
and it could be
hard to navigate
the lane way.
