PHOENIX STRIDERS WALKING & RUNNING CLUB
Phoenix Striders started out as training sessions for ladies who took part in the 2004 'Race for Life' held at GLOUCESTER PARK in Basildon (Essex).
Training was provided, organised and structured by Gwyn Hughes who is one of the founding members of Phoenix Striders walking and running club.
The idea started to take shape as the training went on and talk about setting up a new club came about.
The Race for Life ladies carried on training after achieving the event they had trained so hard to complete. With encouragement all round the club was formed in September 2004 and after one year has grown to over 45 members.
This is a friendly club which welcomes people who just want to improve their fitness as well as serious runners. We believe that with structured training and good advice anyone can improve their standard of fitness and their quality of life.

In its first year the club has been involved in organising the 'Run for the Children' 3K fun run for all ages in Gloucester park,  the inaugural 'Little Havens 5K', the 'Summer Series'; four 5K evening trail runs around the Plotlands Nature Reserve, the Langdon '5' and importantly three fun 3.5K walking event through the reserve for families, dogs and walkers alike.
These events have have raised money for Essex wildlife Trust, Little Havens Childrens Hospice and Children with Leukemia.

Our members have achieved great things in the first year, four new runners took part in the London marathon all finishing respectably and raising over 6,000 on the way. Four more completed  the 'Edge to Edge' marathon in Vancouver Island, Canada. Others have taken part in their first races and felt the buzz of setting a goal and reaching it.
We have had some enjoyable social evenings ranging from Indian meal to bowls to the fastest AGM (15 minutes) followed by a BBQ(2.5 hours)

But the greatest success for us a a club is seeing members come running or walking with us and enjoying themselves whilst improving their health and fitness in a friendly and safe environment.
