Musiktheater Rex Lorsch December 12, 2002

Lorsch is a charming little city with a monastery. It's only a few minutes walk from the town hall, which front was beautifully decorated like a big advent calendar, to arrive the Musiktheater Rex. I came across a beautiful venue with pictures of famous artists around the walls. I decided to sit at a bar table just in front to the stage, and thought it would best to have some red wine because this region is well-known for its winegrowing. I could hardly believe that this was already my last show of their tour! Time really seemed to fly!

The show started with Peer saying "Welcome! It's a pleasure for us to be back here to play again". And he screamed "Are you ready?", and it was great to hear the loudly response from the crowd. He even started it once more to get to the same result, and continued "OK, let's rock'n roll!". I always like this way of starting very much, putting everyone immediately in a great mood, both the band and the audience. Right from the opening number
Freddies Shuffle, the band set the energy level for the rest of the show. The guys ripped through a blistering set, and their spirit, presence and talent amazed everybody. In no time, they had generated a very warm atmosphere, each and every song got huge applause. The next songs were To Be Your Man, Livin' The Life Aint Easy, I Can Tell, and I Aint Beggin'. Three really great artists obviously had fun, poured out their craft and musicianship without any restriction, most of all Peer. The crowd was incredibly appreciative of everything they did.

Coming to the next song
Sams Caf, Peer explained us something. It's about a caf in New York where he saw a wonderful little lady, serving some good food. I was then totally surprised when he dedicated that song to me, as I was following them around many times this year. Once again, thank you so much Peer, you made me very happy play for me that great song. It has such a smooth flowing melody and singing, it's a charming piece of music.

The completely different, and very energetically played number
Please Please Babe followed this up. All had a ball and even two fans were ready to dance. Because they had toured such a lot of time this year with Walter Trout, they played a tribute to this nice man. Then, we were all thrilled by the band's virtuosity demonstrated by the perfectly played marathon version of Tell Me. The band put an incredibly amount of energy into that song. Toward the end, Peer screamed: "Are you ready for some heavy metal?", and it went on to segue into Trouble. It rocked like hell!! Simply fantastic! There was an immense reaction of the crowd; they couldn't stop cheering during and after that outstanding performance. It was obvious that the band recognized their excitement, and Peer heartily thanked everybody for making them so welcome.

Peer bantered us for putting our hands up and clapping along to the fine rock song
Suzy Q. All that was real fun! Then, Peer introduced BP as the wildest most crazy and most ... whatever on drums. It was a blast as we listened to BP's extremely well-played drum solo that pleased the crowd immensely. After a short break, the band came back to play Homegrown Juice. The set was also highlighted by the performance of a very long mind-blowing version of Little Wing, as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Peer put so much emotion into every note that everyone in the venue soaked up every moment of the song. This got one of the biggest cheers at the night, it's just one of those magic moments, brought chills to me. "Thank you so much. You are a very, very nice audience", Peer said. They pulled another masterpiece out of their sleeves, and played Oh Well to get right into Fairytale, and to finish with Oh Well. This is an excellent musical roller coaster, and got the crowd pretty excited. Another amusing part of their show was when Peer burnt his guitar. They finished their main set brilliantly with Hallingcaster, left the stage to come back after the crowd's long and loudly noises.

They played for us the little instrumental piece with Norwegian folk notes beautifully, then
Good Lord, and went off stage again. It was little wonder that the audience screamed for more, and that brought the band back on stage! Peer, really impressed, said: "Jesus Christ! Thank you so much!" He said jokingly that they didn't have anymore left on the set. Someone even suggested to play Oh Well once more. But Peer said they would play some blues before we should be going home. The show found a thunderous end as they kicked themselves into an outstanding version of Empty Arms, which blew everyone away. The band stepped off the stage under huge applause, and left a completely happy and satisfied audience behind.

Peer and the guys all put on a mighty fine performance in front of an absolutely thrilled audience. Again, I was blown away by the sheer genius of the entire band, Peer in particular. I am equally amazed every time I attend their gigs. They are capable of turning each and every show into a highlight. It doesn't matter that I heard most of the same songs every night, because they never seemed to play on the same way twice. I think there were lots of improvisations in many of their songs. These were really nights to remember, and I think all the fans who came will keep them in their memory for a long time, just as I. All in all, I was happy to travel all the ways to the shows, as all concerts were very well worth the journeys.

A little bit later, the guys came out to mix with the fans, and I took two photos of them. After a brief chat, they had to leave, and we said good bye, probably for a long time, but only until their next tour here around.
