Developed in 1994 at Carnegie Mellon Univ by Micheal "fuzzy" Mauldin, now owned by Terra Lycos, a Spanish company.
The Lycos spider is still used to building certain specialty databases, but the site is now powered by the FAST search engine.
The Lycos web directory also uses the Open Directory Project and owns HotBot and matchmaker.com qoute.com whowhere.com

THE LYCOS HOME PAGE
Basic search form does a AND search by default.
Advanced search option drop down menu allows you
to do a AND, OR, or Phrase search. Radio buttons and
fill in the blanks allows you to limit your search. Content for
15 catagories, Page Field to focus on page titles or
web addresses, domain name. Language if other than
english.
Link Referrals to find all the web pages that link
to a specific site. Web Directory, uses the
Open Directory Project like hotbot but lycos makes
you work for the info.
Other Search related tools - SEARCHING WITH LYCOS
To enter a basic search query: use the plus sigh directly
in front of the words for a "all the words" in your query.
To do a OR search or "any of the words" enclose them
in qoutes Use a minus sign directly in front of the words
you want to exclude.

Lycos says that boolean opreators can be used, they do not work. Advanced search is usable for looking for types of information, words in a web page URL's, limiting to a language, or finding web pages that link to a specific site.
