Clearly, it is not possible to sit still permanently, since each lifeform loses 0.4 energy units per turn, and can only eat for 5 consecutive turns before the "grass" in that square is all eaten up (and it only regrows at 0.2 energy units per turn).

However, there are rich pickings to be had by just moving intelligently and grazing. The only problems occur when the world gets too overcrowded, and it may be best to have an alternative carnivorous strategy for such cases.

Being a predator is all about being big, since you can only eat things less than half your size. There can be a race to be the biggest, in order that no other predator is so big that it can eat you. However, a carnivorous strategy must be balanced against the prevailing conditions: it is hardly worth eating something smaller than about 10 energy units, and so if there is insufficient prey around, a herbivorous habit is better.

Reproduction has a cost, but it is essential for a species to reproduce if it is to survive, and so has to be done at quiet moments when there is no prey nearby to eat, for instance.
