| Unless you're part of a small select group, you're probably wondering what the story is behind this element of My Desk. Actually, it's a kind of running joke that got started sometime in 2000 or 2001, when the Class of 2003 was in either 6th or 7th grade. I have a mug on my desk that I use mostly for water during the day. However, it was noticed that I neglected to clean the mug on a reasonably regular basis. Also, it might go unfilled for a few days, which would cause it to get a bit dusty inside. Janet Chow, of the Class of 2003, seemed to pick up on this more than anyone else, and whenever she would come by my desk, especially in 7th grade, she would make a point of checking the mug's cleanliness level. More often than not she would express utter revulsion that it had not the cleanliness she expected. Over the months which turned into years, she developed a long string of adjectives to describe the mug, some of which you see in the picture above. Now that Janet has since graduated from St. Therese, the running joke is more or less over, since a running joke by definition must, well, continue to run. But I'm sure that when she comes back to visit, she won't fail to sit on her stool, inspect the mug, and let me know if it measures up to her standards. |
