DFS Distributed File System

  What is Dfs?

A single logical file structure organizing shared folders on different computers into one logical unit

Users do not need to know where the individual folders are located

Administrators can move the folders to different locations without having to inform the users

Permissions are set at the folder/share level

Stand-Alone v Domain

Stand-Alone Dfs offers no replication or backup, therefore it is a single point of failure

Stand-Alone Dfs roots can be located on all supported file systems

Domain Dfs can be fault tolerant by replicating the Dfs root to other domain controllers

Domain Dfs roots can only be located on NTFS v5 partitions

Auditing

(An overview)

What is auditing?

A security tool for tracking user activities, or events

If configured, these events are recorded in the Event Viewer’s Security log on the computer where the event occurred!

    EACH EVENT WILL RECORD
Action performed
User who performed it
Time and whether success or failure

What can be audited?

        Access to files/folders

        Users logging on/off

        System shut down/restart

Changes to user a/c’s or groups

        Active Directory object changes

        Policy changes

Privilege use (ie use of rights)
