The thesis is essentially a dissertation of two independent but overlapping urban programme. Drawing inspiration from film and the Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown district, the thesis is a personal re-interpretation of the context that pushes the envelope of my own understanding and defintion of architecture. In an urban environment that lacks a strong sense physical identity, is it possible to transfigure Petaling Street’s sense of place through the exploration of ephemereal and transient qualities?

The first programme is entitled

“Petaling St : : the Movie”. It is essentially a physical intervention of the urban fabric through the introduction of a film festival. The programme of the event is superimpose unto the existing urban condition thus re-mapping the urban environment.

The second is entitled
“Lomeo + Juliet”. How would a film-maker represent Petaling Street on film? Through role-play, the programme relates a hypothetical movie that uses Chinatown as a stage. Existing urban spaces are redefined through the creation of imaginary events.
