Descendants of Hiram Perrigo of MO.

My name is Addie Morrissey and I am the submitter of this information. My Grandmother was Addie Henshaw whom married Hiram Perrigo. She had been placed in an Orphanage at the age of 8. From the time she was 8 until she turned 10, she had been placed in 5 foster homes. The last one being the home of a Doctor. At the age of 10 she had been placed back at the Orphanage and was soon sent on the voyage she would never forget. Grandma was placed on the Orphan Train. It left New York and headed west. She was accompanied by a custodian and 13 other children. They stopped 2-4 miles prior to entering a town, the children were removed from the box car they all rode in. They were washed and cleaned, then placed back in the car. Once the train arrived at the out skirts of town, the children were removed from the box car and escorted to the center of town. This is where the towns people would bid on them and the children went to the highest bidder. Grandma told my mother that many times and that she remembers this so vividly and that for the longest time she could never understand why the youngest children went first. Later in life she realized.

Grandma traveled further west until the train arrived in Kansas. There she and one of the other older children on the train were placed on a farm. It was in Kansas that she finished her education. Prior to school, she did the assigned chores on the farm and upon returning home from school, she did more chores, helped fix supper and care for the younger children then as night fell, by lattern proceeded with her home work. She did not ever mention her parents other than she stated she could barely remember them. She stated she often cried herself to sleep as her mother stated I will be back for you. That day never came. It was in Kansas where my Grandmother Addie Henshaw met and married my Grandfather Hiram Perrigo. Little is known of him as well. He never spoke of his family to my mother and her siblings. My mother was the last child born to Hiram & Addie Perrigo. My hopes, are to be able to break down my brick wall and complete my mothers heritage to the best of my ability as I promised I would. I never had the honor nor privelage of knowing my grandparents. I have since learned that we have currently have family in Tennessee and Missouri in which we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. We do hope that we can make it out there, or the family might be able to come to our home in Florida. I now have grandchildren and did not know of this family until I started researching the Perrigo heritage I placed a query on another web site and the Dunehew family contacted me via email. The surnames I am currently working on are Perrigo, Henshaw & VanDine with Perrigo being from Missouri and Henshaw & VanDine from New York. Below you will find my Perrigo Connection. Please feel free to visit often as I will be updating my data as I find new material.

2. HIRAM (HIRIAM)2 PERRIGO (JUSTICE R.1) was born December 06, 1882 in South Green Castle, Missouri, and died July 03, 1959 in Alamosa, Alamosa, Colorado. He married ADELINE HENSHAW November 09, 1919 in Dighton, Lane, Kansas, daughter of GEORGE HENSHAW and ADELINE VAN DINE. She was born December 11, 1892 in New York City, New York, and died June 01, 1948 in Monte Vista, Rio Grande, Colorado.

Notes for HIRAM (HIRIAM) PERRIGO:
As of January 31, 1995 I have been unable to locate information on Grandpa. In Missouri during the era Grandpa was born no records were kept on births. Missouri State tells me there is no such place known as Greencastle. Which is where my Grandfather stated he was born. Recording births was not a requirement and did not become a law until 1893. At that point records were kept for a ten year period and then stopped and later resumed again. I have filled out forms and had these forms notarized allowing a search on census records for the state to be searched. I was told that Grandpa was in the military and if this is true I shall explore all avenues necessary to obtain information on that. After a year of waiting, from June 30, 1997 to June 18, 1998, I received notice that he did not have a SS# and that perhaps it was because he worked for the RR. This has opened new avenues for me as I now have learned who his parents were. My focus on Missouri grows stronger.
In the 1880 & 1900 soundex I have located the various ways of spelling this surname. Parigo, Parrigo, Perigo, Perrgo, Perrego, Perrigo, Perrigouy, Perrogo, Perrigouy, Pherigo, & Pherego.

Notes for ADELINE HENSHAW:
Grandma was an orphan form New York City, New York. She was sent to Kansas as a small child on the orphan train. Rumor has it that she was a twin. I have found no record of her birth or any data suggesting she was a twin other than what had been told to my mother. I am not sure as to where she was actually born and to whom. These documents are sealed and not available. Information and forms have been sent to 85 Orphanages in New York all with a s.a.s.e. requesting assistance and I have contacted the New York Archive Department requesting any information they may have on Grandma.
