Descendants of Robert L. Pherigo Of Kentucky

This Lineage was submitted by Jim Patrick. Mr. Patrick is not a major Pherigo researcher, and has been provided information by other researchers. He is a Hall researcher. This is a hypothetical descent from Robert Pherigo.  Most of this Pherigo work is derivative, and did not originate with us.

this is given from under my hand that i am willing that John Pherigo shall have my daughter Patsy Adams for his wife and this is my hand and ---- Lydia Adams (Seal)

test Alexander Adams
test Samuel Adams"

It is not clear whether the two Adams testators are uncles or brothers to Patsy Adams, but it seems clear that neither one of them is her father, since Lydia Adams refers to "my" daughter.

8. MARY "POLLY"3 PHERIGO (JOHN2, ROBERT L.1) was born January 18, 1813 in KY. She married JOHN HALL, JR. November 01, 1832 in Jefferson Co IN. He was born Abt. 1811 in Jefferson Co. IN.

Notes for MARY "POLLY" PHERIGO:
The primary researcher of this Hall line does not fully accept that Mary "Polly" Pherigo is the wife of
John Hall, Jr., although, since the families seem to have been associated, it's a likelihood that the Pherigo connection is accurate. During the same year, in the same county, a John Hall took out a
marriage license to marry one "Mary Woods". There is no clear proof yet that either of them
is the "Mary" noted as his wife in the 1860 and 1870 census for Madison Twp, Jefferson Co IN.

Notes for JOHN HALL, JR.:
John Hall, Jr. and his wife Mary, are listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Madison Twp, Jefferson Co IN. It seems that, some time between 1851 and 1855, something may have happened to Mary Pherigo, either death or divorce.
A Mary Peck Chapman married a John Hall, Jr. in 1855. She may have been about the same age as Mary Pherigo. It seems a plausible explanation.

In the 1860 census, John is listed with his wife, Mary. Two children are listed in addition to ones listed on the 1850 census:
Elizabeth Chapman - 11 yrs
Mary F. - 09 yrs

Also listed in the 1860 household is Elizabeth Eastin, "tailoress". Elizabeth was the sister of John Hall. Where was her husband, at war? She and her husband, William Easton, were later in Menard Co IL, in 1880 census.

Marriage Notes for MARY PHERIGO and JOHN HALL:
Question about documentation.

Same year, Mary Woods married John Hall in Jefferson Co. IN

ii. ELIZABETH HALL, b. Abt. 1837, Jefferson Co IN; m. WILLIAM EASTIN, February 28, 1854, Jefferson Co IN; b. Abt. 1830, Indianapolis (Marion) IN.

Elizabeth married Easton and were listed in 1880 census in Menard Co IL.
In 1860, Elizabeth was listed with John HALL Jr and Mary in Jefferson County IN.
She was listed as "Elizabeth Eastin"

15. PRISCILLA4 HALL (MARY "POLLY"3 PHERIGO, JOHN2, ROBERT L.1) was born Abt. 1835 in Jefferson Co IN. She married GEORGE W. CROSS April 11, 1855 in Jefferson Co IN. He was born Abt. 1820.

Notes for PRISCILLA HALL:
Priscilla married George Cross in 1850, when she was 20 years old, and they moved to Menard Co IL.

In 1870 Census, Menard Co IL, family is listed as flws:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cross, George W. 50 MD Physician
Percilla 36 IN
George 10 IL
Lourina 7 IL
Mary 3 IL
Randolph 8/12 IL

In 1880 census, Menard Co IL, Priscilla is listed as flws:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pettit, Orson 27 IL KY KY
Alice 18 IL MD IN
Cross, Priscilla 48 IN KY KY Mother-in-law

The information for "Alice", listed above, coincides with that of Lourina Cross,
Priscilla's daughter. Was she named "Alice Lourina"?

On same page of 1880 census:
---------------------------------------------------
Easton, Wm 51 IN KY IN
Elizabeth 43 IN IN KY wife
Cross, Mary 12 IL MD IN niece
Malissa 2 IL ----- IL niece

On same page of 1880 census:
---------------------------------------------------
Petit, Mary F. 57 KY DE DE
Cross, Randolph 10 IL MD IN Works at Sawmill

Could Malissa have been the illegitimate daughter of one of Priscilla's children? They don't name the father's birthplace. She was born in IL, & so was her mother.

George W. Cross (Sr.) must have died or disappeared prior to 1880, for he isn't listed on the mortality schedule for that year. Where is George (Jr.?) Not listed in census of 1880. He would have been 20 yrs old. George and Priscilla must have moved to IL shortly after they were married, since George (Jr.) was born IL 1860. George divorced his first wife (Mary Serring), and left her with two or three daughters to raise when he went to Illinois with Priscilla.

Notes for GEORGE W. CROSS:
George and Priscilla are listed in the 1870 census for Menard Co IL.
It notes that he is a physician.

Note the name "Randolph" in the following bio
Are these people the reason that George went to Illinois?:

Source: History of White County, IL, Phillips Township (ca 1882-1884) p 930

Thomas Cross, farmer; post office, Crossville; is the son of William and Prudence (Randolph) Cross, natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively. They came to Illinois in 1812'13, and after fighting Indians and raising a large family, died here. Thomas was born on the farm where he now lives, July 19, 1820. He was educated here, and has followed farming. He now owns this old homestead, and has added to it so that he has 30 acres of very find land, 400 acres under cultivation, on sections, 23, 24 and 13; also owns another trace of seventy acres on sections 26 and 27. The town of Crossville lays mostly on his land. In 1860 he married Martha E., daughter of Paul and Rachel (Davis) Clifford, natives of Vermont and Indiana respectively. They came to Illinois and died here. Martha E. was born in Illinois, April 28, 1843. By this union there are eleven children, eight living - George, born Dec. 25, 1860, married (his wife died in six months after marriage); Thomas, July 14, 1862; Emma R., Aug. 8, 1864; Flora A, Oct. 9, 1866; Mattie A., July 5, 1871; Virgil L., Dec. 18, 1875; David E., Feb. 10, 1880, and Estella May, July 23, 1882, are living. William P. P., Annie C. and an infant daughter are deceased. Mrs. Cross is a member of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Cross votes the Democratic ticket, and is highly respected by all.

16. LEVI WILLIAM4 HALL (MARY "POLLY"3 PHERIGO, JOHN2, ROBERT L.1) was born 1839 in Jefferson Co IN, and died Abt. 1878 in Lebanon. He married MARY MIZELLA HALL May 09, 1860 in Jefferson Co IN. She was born March 31, 1835 in Jefferson Co IN, and died November 26, 1905 in Columbus (Bartholomew) IN.

Notes for LEVI WILLIAM HALL:
The family was in Menard Co IL in 1878, and were in Bartholomew Co IN in 1880, without Levi. He was said to have died en route from Menard to "Lebanon".
However, it has never been clear whether this was Lebanon, IL, IN, or KY.
It was presumeably Lebanon, Indiana.
Levi William Hall was a cooper.
In the middle 1870's, Levi and Mizella were living in Menard Co IL, although it's not clear exactly why. He was having trouble renting land for his "roots".
When they were ready to travel to "Lebanon", they were required to travel under escort with a contingent from the army, supposedly because of Indian problems in the area. Supposedly, Levi died in "Lebanon" about 1878, although no records can be found.

Notes for MARY MIZELLA HALL:
Mizella is listed in the 1860 census, Jefferson County, Madison, as "Mersilla".

Notes for STEPHEN RUSSELL HALL:
Stephen Russell Hall changed his name to Stephen Richard Hall.
We are not sure when he changed his name, but he said that it cost him $25.

The marriage to Ethel williams was annulled.
They parted on the church steps. Family anecdote says that, on the steps of the building, Stephen said to Ethel,"Now you've got what you wanted." He turned, and walked away. Further, it is said that Ethel was pregnant at the time. Her father, Ben Williams, of Johnson County, worked with Stephen at the time.

Stephen and Alva were married in Indianapolis under the names
"Richard Hall" and "Edna Hendricks".

It is not known for sure when Steve's family located in Columbus, Indiana.
We know that Mizella returned there with her children in 1878-79, after the death of Levi William. However, Steve related a story regarding the block of land in downtown Columbus where the First Christian Church now stands, which was owned by the Irwin Family before the church was built. For another story about that land, see notes about Steve's wife, Agnes (Alva). Steve had been born about 1871, in "Lebanon". He never said what state -- whether Lebanon KY, IL, or IN. It was always presumed that he meant Lebanon, IN, but no indication was given. After 1878 or thereabouts (After the death of Levi), Mizella (Steve's mother) and the rest of the family lived in Columbus, but it's unclear exactly why they moved back there. Scott was known to have moved to Columbus in about 1905-07, according to his obituary, so unless he had lived there earlier, around 1878-79, he could not have been the reason that Mizella moved there. An interesting connection might be the fact that Scott lived in Boone County (Lebanon IN) for some length of time, which might have been why Stephen was born there.

Steve said that when he was a youngster, his mother occasionally took him for walks past the block where the Christian Church is now located, and that a factory occupied that position at the time. Further, that she often cried when they passed the factory, because Levi, her husband, had worked there. Levi was a cooper, so it would be interesting to know if that was a factory that would have used a cooper.

Stephen had a prodigious memory. He casually mentioned family relationships to Ethel on occasion. Once, when the "Great Gildersleeve" (the lead character's name was Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve) was on the radio, he said that he had relatives named "Throckmorton" who lived in Zanesville, Ohio.

He also said that he had aunts who were twins, and that he had a well-to-do Uncle Richard, who lived in Chicago.
