Generation No. 3
3. John3 Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo (Abel2, Joseph1) was born April
26, 1801 in Sussex Co.(?), NJ, and died November 02, 1874 in
Jefferson Twp, Poweshiek Co., IA. He married Clarissa (Clarrisy)
Jane Conklin2 June 11, 1825 in Vernon Twp., Sussex Co., NJ (this
wedding date is questionable), daughter of Joseph Conklin and
Deborah unknown). She was born June 29, 1809 in NY, and died June
28, 1875 in Deckertown, Wantage Twp., Sussex Co., NJ (possibly
died in IA and her body returned to NJ).
Notes for John Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo:
John's gravestone in the Winslow Cemetery of Jefferson Twp.,
Poweshiek Co., IA says: J. Perrego, died 2 Nov. 1871 at the age
of 73 years, 6 months, and 6 days. This information from the LDS
microfilm #1023109, "IA Cemetery & Grave Records of
Pottawattamie and Poweshiek Co.s" One area of the microfilm
said some of the headstones were difficult to read. Another
source (a Perrego researcher), Mr. Charles D. Williamson, of
Rancho Mirage, CA states that John died 2 Nov. 1874... ( I
figured this would have given him a birth date of 26 Apr 1801,
which is consistent with Perigo Bible pages). I have copies of
the Perigo Bible pages from Greta Olsen.
Note from Nancy Pascal (Perrigo researcher): John was residing in
Hardyston Twp in 1860. Was Clarrisa with him in this census?
In the NJ Index of Marriages it shows a John Perrigo marrying a
Clarruh Miller, 11 June 1825. Question:
Did John Perrigo marry a Clarrisa "Clarruh" (Conklin)
Miller? Was Clarrisa Conklin married before she married John
Perrigo?
Notes for Clarissa (Clarrisy) Jane Conklin:
NJ Will: Clarrisa Perigo, Sussex Co., NJ will and probate #
03961, 1875.
Obtained a copy of the will of Clarrisa Perego Sept. 27, 2000 and
it does varify the fact that Clarrisa was married to John Perigo,
and that their daughter, Elvira, was the wife of Wm S.
"Sanford" Decker. The will was filed and recorded 9
July 1875 in NJ.
Conklin information source...Nancy Pascal.
Question: Did Clarrisa Conklin marry a man named
"Miller" (indexed in the NJ Marriages) before marrying
John Perigo? Is 11 June 1825 the right wedding date for John
Perigo and Clarris Conklin??? There was a Clarruh Conklin married
to a Miller...is this wedding date belong to this union??
One Decker/Perrigo researcher says that Clarrisa Perigo died in
Poweshiek Co., IA, but burial records and Clarrisa's will
indicate she died in Deckertown, Wantage Twp., Sussex Co., NJ.
Info source: Charles D. Williamson, 71-411 Estillita Dr., Rancho
Mirage, CA (Apr. 10, 1992). Charles claimed that Clarissa died in
Poweshiek Co., IA, but I know from her will she is buried in NJ.
Her body may have been shipped back to NJ for burial.

7. Elvira (Emeline?)4 Perrigo (John3 Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo,
Abel2, Joseph1)3 was born January 30, 1831 in Hamburg, Hardyston
Twp., Sussex Co., NJ (now Vernon Twp.), and died August 03, 1889
in Brooklyn, Jefferson Twp, Poweshiek Co., IA. She married
William Sanford Decker3,4 December 04, 1847 in Hamburg, Vernon
Twp., Sussex Co., NJ, son of William -or- a Stephen Decker. He
was born July 14, 1815 in Deckerstown, Wantage Twp. - or-
Hamburg, Hardyston Twp., Sussex Co., NJ (now Vernon Twp.), and
died May 23, 1900 in Gladstone, Jefferson Twp, Poweshiek Co., IA
(from stomach cancer).
Notes for Elvira (Emeline?) Perrigo:
Was Elvira's first or second name Emeline? This shows up in the
marriage list as an Emeline Perrigo marrying a William Sanford
(last name left off...Decker). Her death date is from an obituary
column in Iowa. She was a member of the Christian Church.
Received a picture of Elvira's headstone in the Winslow Cem. of
Poweshiek Co., IA (from Diana Hall in Iowa) that says Elvira died
3 Aug. 1889.
Notes for William Sanford Decker:
Info extracted from 1850 New Jersey, Sussex Co.
William Sanford Decker married 1.) Nancy B. Little (Indexed in
the NJ Marriage Records). With Nancy they had the following
children: Martha, Joseph, Frances, Ann, James, and an unamed
infant. His 2nd marriage with Elvira Perrigo resulted in
children: John W., Alice, Caroline, George, Emma, Eva, Lewis,
Nettie, and Adaline.
Living next door to William Sanford and Elvira (Emeline?)(Perigo)
Decker in the 1850 census of Vernon Twp., on one side was John
and Clarrisa Perigo, the father and mother of Elvira, and a
supposed brother to Wm Sanford Decker living on the other side, a
Joel Decker.
Sanford and Elvira resided in NJ until the fall of 1859 when they
moved with their family to Brooklyn, Iowa where they lived a
short time before moving to Jefferson Twp., IA.
Info from Greta Olsen 7/19/2000 says from a Marriage Book A,
1834-1878 of Sussex Co., PA, page 127 of book "A" an
Emeline Perrigo married to William Sanford on 4 Dec. 1847. The
recorder of the marriage mistakenly wrote Emeline (possibly the
middle name of Elvira) instead of Elvira and the recorder also
errored in leaving off the last name of William Sanford Decker.
The above information varified by obituary for William Sanford
Decker in the Montezume IA Republican sent by the Poweshiek Co.
Historical & Genealogy Chapt., IGS, PO Box 70, 206 N. Mill,
Montezume, IA 50171 received by me, George J. Sweeney, 18 Sept.
2000. Sanford Decker died of stomach cancer.
Received pictures of William's headstone in the Winslow Cem. at
Poweshiek Co., IA (from Diana Hall in Iowa) that states his birth
date as 14 July 1815 whereas the obit column stated 15 July 1815.
It is only a supposition that William Sanford Decker's father was
Wm...there was also a Stephen Decker living in Wantage Twp.
during the 1830 census with a son in the right bracket to be Wm.
Sanford. Also, a John and a Michael Decker with boys in the right
slot.

November 29, 1879, Beaver Twp., Iroquois Co., IL; d. June 02,
1911, Oakland, CA.
Generation No. 5
9. John W.5 Decker (Elvira (Emeline?)4 Perrigo, John3
Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo, Abel2, Joseph1) was born December 08,
1848 in Vernon Twp., Sussex Co, NJ...most likely Vernon Twp., and
died September 10, 1919 in Cedar Twp Poole, Buffalo, NE. He
married (1) Clara Clare (twin) Brewer August 24, 1873 in Iowa,
daughter of James Brewer and Jane Dixon. She was born January 02,
1855 in Jefferson Twp, Poweshiek Co., IA, and died May 30, 1874
in Jefferson Twp, Poweshiek Co., IA (buried Winslow Cem.). He
married (2) Emmaline "Emma" Enize Brewer June 23, 1875
in Keokuk Co., IA, daughter of James Brewer and Jane Dixon. She
was born September 01, 1860 in Richland Twp, Tama Co, IA, and
died January 11, 1940 in Poole, Buffalo, NE (died at her farm
home).
Notes for John W. Decker:
One source says John and Emma were married in Keokuk, IA and
another source says Tama, IA (?).
1870 census of Jefferson Twp., Poweshiek Co., IA has the Wm S.
Decker family page 17, line 6. John Perigo, 69, listed as living
with them. John Perigo was the father of Wm S. Decker's wife,
Elvira.
In the Winslow Cem. of Jefferson Twp., Poweshiek Co., IA there is
a gravestone in the Decker plot that says: Clara Decker (Clara
was a sister of John Decker's second wife, Emma Brewer) died 30
May 1874, age 19 years, 5 months...wife of JOHN DECKER. John
Decker didn't marry Emma Brewer, sister of his 1st wife Clara
Brewer, until June 1875. (This info from the LDS library Film
#1023109, "IA Cemetery and Grave Records of Pottawattamie
and Poweshiek Co.s from 1800-1900).
Photo copy from Sam Sweeney of Brewer info: shows John W. Decker
1st married Clara Brewer, and 2nd to Emmeline "Emma"
Enize Brewer. This photocopy also says that John W. Decker was
born in Deckertown, Wantage Twp., Sussex Co., NJ. If John W. was
born in Wantage Twp., they moved before 1850 to Vernon Twp.,
Sussex Co., as seen by the 1850 Fed Census.
John and Emma Decker were enumerated in Jefferson Twp., Poweshiek
Co., IA in the 1900 census (the 1900 census was taken 21 June
1900) with two of their daughters, Christina and Daisy, and a
boarder, John S. Force (who eventually married Christina
"Tina" Decker). Why were Emma and John Decker counted
in the 1900 census as living in Jefferson Twp.?? Were they just
visiting Jefferson Twp., during the census?? The obituary for
Emma Decker stated that they moved to Webster Co., NE in 1878 and
later moved to Buffalo Co. in 1880 and settled in Cedar Twp.,
south of Poole, NE, where she lived for 60 years. In the 1910 Fed
Census they were found living in Cedar Twp., (Poole, NE) Buffalo
Co., NE, with a grandson, Justin C. Sweeney, the daughters all
married.
I saw the dugout ground depressions in a small rise near the
South Loup River (in July 2003) on the old Tillson place near
Poole, NE; shown to me by an old Poole resident, Chick Tillson.
Chick Tillson "thinks" these dugouts were first
occupied by John and Emma Decker in the late 1880s. I have heard
from a family member (Sam Sweeney) that the dugouts were used by
Sam's father, James Edward Sweeney and his wife Mary Janette
Decker, to raise some of his family. It is my (George J. Sweeney)
assumption that Jim and Mary moved into the dugouts after John
Decker acquired the land in Cedar Twp., Buffalo Co., NE. I know
from the 1900 census of Poweshiek Co., IA, that John and Emma
were living there during the census with two daughters, Tina and
Daisy.
The way I (George J. Sweeney) have it constructed...is that John
and Emma had their first daughter, Mary Janette, in Belleplain,
IA in 1878, then moved to Nebraska in 1878 to Webster Co., and
later moved to Buffalo Co. in 1880 where the other two daughters
were born...possibly in the dugout mentioned above.
Land deeded to John W. Decker in deed book G-239, NE1/4 2-11-15
of Buffalo Co., NE.
John and Emma Decker are both buried in Majors Cemetery south of
Poole, NE.
Notes for Clara Clare (twin) Brewer:
Received a picture of Clara's headstone in the Winslow Cem.,
Poweshiek Co., IA (from Diana Hall from Iowa).
More About John Decker and Clara Brewer:
Marriage: August 24, 1873, Iowa
Notes for Emmaline "Emma" Enize Brewer:
I (Jerry Sweeney) vaguely remember Grandma Emma. She lived on the
Decker farm south of Poole, Ne., with my uncle, Justin Sweeney. I
recall when I was very young that Grandma Emma had an ornate old
valentine that I was particularly attracted to. She got very
senile before her death, and when I requested to look at the
valentine no one could find it. It was assumed that she had hid
it or destroyed it to keep me from seeing it. I barely recall
seeing her on her death bed. After her death, my uncle Justin
(Dick) continued to farm the Decker place. She is buried with her
husband in the Majers Cemetery south of
Poole, NE. She moved to Webster Co. Nebraska in 1878 then to
Buffalo Co. in 1880 from Poweshiek Co., IA.

Marriage: December 22, 1905, Oakland, CA
Child of Abel Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo and Mabel Bowman is:
15. i. EVELYN6 PERRIGO/PERREGO/PERIGO.
Generation No. 6
12. Mary Janette6 Decker (John W.5, Elvira (Emeline?)4 Perrigo,
John3 Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo, Abel2, Joseph1) was born May 04,
1878 in Belleplain, IA, and died November 07, 1931 in Eugene,
Lane Co., OR. She married James Edward Sweeney July 05, 1893 in
Loup City, Sherman Co., NE, son of George Sweeney and Satiah
Criner/Craner. He was born May 14, 1863 in Millerstown, Fawn Twp
(or West Deer Twp.) Allegheny Co., PA, and died February 18, 1947
in Springfield, Lane Co., OR.
Notes for Mary Janette Decker:
Mary was 15 years old when she married, however, on her marriage
certificate she stated she was 18 years old (probably because her
parents were not present and the Nebr. law required the age of 18
without parents present). This is especially interesting as this
may have been the time her husband, Jim, 'became age 26 instead
of age 30 as stated in two previous PA census'. She stated she
was born in Belleplain, IA, however, the family more than likely
lived in Poweshiek Co., near Belleplaine which is in Benton Co.,
IA.
Notes for James Edward Sweeney:
James'gravestone indicates year of birth as 1867, however, census
report entries of 1870 and 1880 were consistent indicating he was
born in 1863. My question: why would he change his birth date
from 1863 to 1867? James died by suicide, jumping in the
Willamette River; body was not found for one month. (See notes
under Mary Janette Sweeney re: ages).
Jim Sweeney left Pennsylvania probably just after his father's
death in the 1880s. His mother, Satiah (Criner) Sweeney stayed in
PA and was found living as a widow with a nephew, George W.
Hazlet, in the 1900 census. Jim was a "mule skinner" in
the state of Missouri for a short time before moving to Nebr.
After his marriage his early family lived in a dug-out (a living
area in the side of a hill), probably on the Tilson place, just
west of Pool Siding, (Poole) NE which is just south of Ravenna,
Nebr. In the early 1900's they moved to Whitman, NE (I assume
that the move was to take advantage of the Kincaid Bill which
allowed settlers to free land; if this was true, the move was
premature, as the Bill didn't come into being until about 1906,
and Jim with his family and newborn, George P. (my father) moved
back to Poole, NE, living just north of the town one mile on land
owned by Dr. Samuel Noah Bentley. After reading an excerpt from
Winona Snell's "Poole Remembered", she stated that the
village of Pool Siding went 'bankrupt' and the land was sold off
about 1900 which probably influenced Jim Sweeney to move his
family west to Whitman, NE. James and Mary moved from Poole to
Ravenna, NE before 1915.
I (Jerry Sweeney) can recall, when I was a youngster visiting in
Ore., my grandfather, Jim, could eat Christmas candy by
positioning the candy, just right, on his gums and crunching the
candy-WITHOUT HIS DENTURES IN! He was truly a tough old Irishman!
I was told by my father (George Philo
Sweeney) that his father, Jim, had taken "the cure" for
alcoholism two times.

1903, Buckeye Valley (Near Gibbon, NE), Buffalo Co., NE; d. July

Notes for JUSTIN CLARK "DICK" SWEENEY:
Dick, as he preferred to be called, had a game leg (injured when
he was pulled from a farm implement onto frozen ground, by a team
of horses and lost a knee cap). He most usually carried a pint of
whiskey in his back pocket that he and his brother-in-law, Ralph
Fester, had brewed with a home still. After brewing a batch of
home liquor, they would disassemble the still so the the
revenuers could not prosecute them. Dick kept his half of the
still under the wash shed floor.
Dick was "farmed out" as a youngster to be raised by
his grandparents John and Emma (Brewer) Decker on the Decker farm
just south of Poole, NE. Dick's father, Jim Sweeney, was an
alcoholic and was extremely poor. Dick did not grow up with his
siblings consequently he never had a good relationship with them.
My father, George P. Sweeney...Dick's older brother, said that
Emma and John Decker spoiled Dick.
Dick was deeded the property on Emma Decker's death, however, his
aunt Tina would not relinquish her share. He eventually gained a
clear deed to this property. At the time of his death (in a
street in Kearney, NE.) he had a fair amount (?) of money on him,
but the undertaker found nothing on the body? Justin (Dick) left
the bulk of his estate to his lady friend, Mildred Fester (the
widow of Otis Fester...Otis being Dick's brother-in-law).
Justin's will left bonds of $10,000 to Ralph Fester. He left his
brothers $5 each, and his living sister, Thelma, $1.
Justin C. (Dick) was married to Flora Elizabeth Fester. Flora was
injured in a county road accident on her way to visit Dick in a
Kearney, Ne., hospital while he was recovering from a minor
stroke. She suffered severe chest injuries and died in the
hospital. I remember Dick as a real cowboy and tough talking
person. His laugh was infectious! Dick and Flora are both buried
in Majors Cem. south of Poole, NE. They had no children.
Notes for FLORA ELIZABETH FESTER:
Flora (Fester) Sweeney died in the Kearney, NE Hospital as a
result of a car accident on her way to the hospital to visit her
husband, Justin "Dick" Sweeney who was recovering from
a stroke.

Notes for Floyd J. Sweeney:
Uncle Floyd (as reported by George J. (Jerry) Sweeney), was known
early in his life to be a hefty drinker. I was told by my father,
Geo. P. Sweeney, that he was 'cured' from the bottle, and went in
the other
direction, and became a 'reborn Christian' and was very
religious. Floyd was a cement finisher. He died from a heart
attack while shaving one morning. Floyd and Ethel had one
daughter, Thelma, who resides in Ore. as of this entry, Sept.

WWI. He entered the service at Grand Island 5 July 1918. John
trained at Ft. Bayard for service in the Medical Corps, and
served in France on the Argonne front with supplies, later in

met and married Oleta Hamilton. They lived in the area of
Springfield, OR until around 1932 when they moved to the coast.
He was a craftsmen in cement work, especially, fireplaces. He
started a home in Oregon that was never completed (this was

19. George Philo7 Sweeney (Mary Janette6 Decker, John W.5, Elvira
(Emeline?)4 Perrigo, John3 Perrigo/Perrego/Perigo, Abel2,
Joseph1) was born January 23, 1902 in Whitman, Grant Co., NE, and
died December 16, 1969 in Grand Island, Hall Co., NE. He married
Leland "Lee" Fern Clark June 21, 1929 in Grand Island,
Hall Co., NE, daughter of Martin Clark and Elizabeth Pool. She
was born May 12, 1907 in Arlington, Washington Co., NE, and died
May 03, 1983 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE.
Notes for George Philo Sweeney:
George P. was born in a sod house in western Nebraska at Whitman,
and his family moved back to Poole, Ne., when he was still quite
young. He completed the eighth grade and shortly thereafter, went
to work for the Burlington Railroad in Ravenna, NE at age 15. His
father, mother, and siblings moved to Oregon in 1921. George
continued working for the CB&Q RR and was transferred from
Ravenna, NE, in 1943 to the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand
Island, NE during the 2nd World War; he was active with the
railroad until his death. He was much admired by his fellow
workers because of the knowledge he had accumulated during his 52
years of service. I was very proud of my father!
Notes for Leland "Lee" Fern Clark:
"Lee" graduated from high school in Arlington, NE in
1925. She moved to Ravenna, NE and worked for Lyman Cass, Editor,
of the Ravenna News as a hot lead type setter. She met my father,
George Philo Sweeney, in Ravenna when he was working as a clerk
for the Burlington RR.
After their marriage in Grand Island, NE in June of 1929 they
made their home at the NW corner of Verona and Seneca Aves. Lee
gave birth to both her boys, Jerry and Dale, in this home. Times
were difficult during the drought and depression years, however,
my father always had some money to put away because of his job
with the railroad.
In 1943 the family moved to Grand Island, NE because George was
transferred by the railroad to the Burlington's office on the
Cornhusker Ordnance Plant. Lee worked as a meat wrapper for the
Safeway grocery store and later as a sale's clerk for Sears &
Roebuck. After 1956 Lee's health failed due to a congestive heart
condition, high blood pressure, and diabetes and she retired to
her home.
After George died (in 1969) Lee moved to Lincoln in the early
1970s to be near her oldest son, Jerry. She met and married a man
by the name of Fred Roberts. They enjoyed many years together
until my mother had a series of strokes in the early 1980s and
she was moved to a nursing care facility in Lincoln. She died in
Tabitha Nursing Home in 1983.
Lee was a joyous person; she loved practical jokes and enjoyed
playing cards with friends and family. Lee was a very intelligent
person...able to repair most anything. Lee was an exceptional
cook.

November 21, 1908 in Creswell, OR, and died May 08, 1995 in
Springfield, OR (cremated...burial Laurel Cem.).
Notes for Samuel Noah Sweeney:
After moving to Oregon in 1921 Sam first worked for a railroad
and later a telephone company in Springfield, OR. He enjoyed
gardening.
Sam is the only Sweeney boy of the James E. Sweeney family to
live into his 80's. I, Jerry Sweeney, visited him in late 1983,
in Springfield, Or. He was in great health and eating like 'a
Thresher. He married Doris Girard, who was crippled as a
youngster in an auto/bicycle accident, and nearly lost her legs.
Later one leg had to be removed.
I visited Sam again in Aug. 1991 - still in great shape, however,
having difficulty (at a weight of 123 lbs.) taking care of his
wife who is confined to a wheelchair. Doris had a terrible ulcer
on her only leg that required surgery in late fall of 1991. After
recuperating in the hospital she was moved to a private care
facility.
Date: 7 May 1992, received word that Sam had a subarachnoid
hemorrhage; he died May 16, 1992, cremated, and buried at Laurel
