| PERIWINKLE BUSHLAND - Bounded by Periwinkle, Meridian and Charonia Roads in Mullaloo, Western Australia. In early 2002 an environmental team was sent in by the Joondalup City Council to assess this area and catalogue the various native and introduced species of plants. An initial clean-up was carried out and a limestone walk trail installed with perimeter fencing and access gates at three points. Over the last 18 months council contractors have hand-spraying various weeds and grasses in an attempt to eradicate most of these plants - pelargoniums are a particular problem. Since its formation in April 2002 the Friends of Periwinkle Bushland group has liaised with the council in the continued preservation and rehabilitation of this area. The group's main objectives are to keep the bush tidy, gain community interest, plant native plants, weed out non-local flora and re-introduce local fauna. A flock of the rare and endangered Carnaby's cockatoos have been sighted regularly using this bushland and have been registered with Cockatoo Care. Three seats have been placed in friendly positions around the pathways giving walkers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the bush.
