Raptor Watch Week
9th - 12th March 2000
Blue Lagoon, Tanjung Tuan (Cape
Rachardo)
Come and be part of the inaugural Raptor Watch Week
organised by the Bird Conservation Council of Malaysian Nature Society!
This event is part of the MNS 60th Anniversary
celebrations. Be at Blue Lagoon to welcome back raptors (birds of prey) as they
return to Malaysia on their journey back to their breeding grounds in East Asia. No
special skills or equipment are needed to witness this spectacular phenomenon, just a wish
to experience the wonder of nature!
Tanjung Tuan is internationally known as a crossing point
and rest stop for thousands of migratory birds, especially raptors. In autumn, these
birds leave their breeding grounds in East Asia to pass the cold winter months in the
warmer climate of South-east Asia. Thousands of raptors reach Indonesia by flying
across the Straits of Malacca at Tanjung Tuan which is located at the narrowest section of
the Straits. In spring, beginning in March, they again make the hazardous return
journey.
The Raptor Watch Week aims to raise public awareness of the
importance of Tanjung Tuan for migrating raptors and also to carry out research on these
threatened birds. This exciting bird-watching event will be held on the beach at
Blue Lagoon. Everyone is welcome to drop by on any of the 4 days between 9 am to 5
pm. Volunteers are also needed to help out. For more information, please
