The First Aeon
It all
began with Grinneal. The God of
All. The embodiment of all that was, is, and ever shall be.
A nice guy, really. You should get to know him, maybe borrow a
cup of sugar, bake him some cookies, he'd have liked that.
Sadly ,
our minds could not possibly comprehend
Grinneal. Our feeble mortal minds are simply utterly inadequate
to the simple task of looking upon one so great as Grinneal. More
to the point, to gaze
upon Grinneal would be to know madness in the instant before your heart
burst out of your chest, climbed up to perch upon your nose and
consumed your eyeballs. The name "Grinneal" means "the
bottom of the sea", which can offer some clue to what he may have
looked like. However, walking up to him to borrow aforementioned
cup of sugar isn't really the best idea...
Grinneal started everything, but how did he do
it? Must have been a really neat trick, when you think about
it. But don't think too hard about it. The origins of
Temuair and the lands beyond are things we cannot know. Mostly
because Grinneal was the only one around at the time. But there's
a deeper reason, too. You see, much like we couldn't possibly
understand Grinneal, we have an equally inept psyche for comprehending
his work. To understand how Grinneal worked out everything would
require an intellect of compare to Grinneal's. Even if Grinneal
himself were to explain it all to you, your mind couldn't possibly
understand it, and would most likely leap violently out of one's
cranium in search of the mystic wicker basket that can safely shield it
from such utter nonsensical madness.
So...
We can't know fully who created the world, nor
how. Even why Grinneal did such is a matter of debate, but that's
for philosophers to ponder(*). All we can
say for certain is that in
the beginning, Grinneal began everything. What a guy! For
his kindly allowing our reality to exist, relatively free of the
inconceivable horrors from beyond, we dated the first years with his
name. Thus the first year of record is called Grinneal 1.
It may
seem like lazy Historians simply aren't doing
their jobs in determining the ultimate answer, solving the mysteries
behind the origins of everything, but it is best to say that the
reasons for Grinneal doing what he did are simply ineffable.
Really, we don't want to know, it's utter madness.
