Durango Deuce Engine Parts XVI
This is the Cloyes timing chain and 'Hex-A-Just' timing gears installed in the CompCams two piece billet cover.

The timing gear is adjustable so additional fine tuning of the cam is possible. You can also see the thrust bearing "button".
Here cam endplay is being measured and adjusted via shims that fit between the cam button and the cam. This is also a tedious but necessary process. The two piece cover will allow easy acess for cam timing adjustment, cam changes if necessary, and is strong enough to resist cam thrust deflection.
Expensive but worth every penny.
The heads are installed with the correct compressed thickness head gaskets and ARP head bolts. This picture is out of sequence. After measuring the valvetrain geometry this heads were actually removed and re-installed several times.
Installation of the Jesel shaft rockers required very precise valvetrain geometry. Due to the amount of material removed from the heads and deck, "normal" pushrods would be too long. Using an adjustable measuring pushrod I was able to determine the pushrod length.
Custom Smith Brothers pushrods were ordered but once installed it was discovered that the valve stem height was too high. The heads had to be removed and dis-assembled to correct. Time was running out but it had to be done to be right. Notice the port and how thin the lower gasket area is. These heads were milled to the maximum we dared. It would have been better to start with 50 cc heads!
Here the tips are ground and the ends chamfered. This took a lot of extra time and patience to get right.
