Work Experience

Product Designer & Developer

IIT-Madras Chennai, India                                               Autumn 2004

I worked in a team of four to develop a complete product architecture which included Quality Functional Deployment (QFD), conceptual design and evaluation and embodiment design for eight products, as a term paper.

As a team we were required to first go through the tedious procedures of customer need analysis, for which we conducted surveys throughout the campus.

With a  sample size of 15-20 for each product, we were able to get good results. The needs in mind specifications for each product was decided and a complete QFD chart was prepared using QFDCapture

After the QFD, we followed a completely structured design approach for developing concepts for the products. Functional decomposition was done and product vectors were generated for all the eight products, following which a rigorous concept generation was done for two products. We evaluated each concept thoroughly using decision matrices and TRIZ approach.

The final selected concepts were modeled and CAD drawings were made using ProE 2001:

Design of Handicap Friendly Rail Coach

Vidyasagar Chennai, India                                              Autumn 2003

I Worked with Vidyasagar (ex Spastics Society of India) to design a Handicap Friendly Rail Coach which was officially proposed to the Indian Railways.

It started with an on the spot design contest, for which my design was adjudged the best, and went on to become a month long project with Vidyasagar.

The work was to design the interior layout of a railway coach so as to make it accessible to the physically challenged. I also provided a scheme for integrating the coach in mainstream railways operations.

Summer Intern

Hero Honda Motors Ltd Delhi, India                            Summer 2004

As an intern I was attached to the Tool Engineering department in Hero Honda Motor Ltd (HHML)

I was assigned the project on Predictive And Preventive Tool Change and TPM Activity on Cylinder Head machining line (shopfloor). The first phase of the project required me to prepare a list of tools and their actual life on the m/c line. Once the tooling list was prepared a software was developed in collaboration with the   IT Department of HHML, which used the tool life data and predicted the appropriate tool change date for each tool.

The second phase was to implement Total Preventive Maintenance on the Cylinder Head m/c line with respect to the Tool Engineering. It was found that the major cause of down time was the tool change procedure, for which I suggested various solutions.

1. Independent toolboxes  for each machine.

Toolbox with Shadow board

Toolbox fixed on to the machine

2. A calibrated height setting gauge for drills.

Assistant Trainee Engineer

Vortex Engineering Pvt. Ltd Chennai, India                Winter 2003

My work at Vortex Engineering was to research existing technology available in Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) and hence help in designing a new low cost ATM.

The task included extensive patent database searches and assessment of the various technologies used in an ATM concluding in a final report on existing systems and mechanisms in present day ATMs.

Dual Fuel Injection Systems

IIT-Madras Chennai, India                                                    2004-2005

As a pure interest based, out of course  initiative, under the guidance of Prof. A Ramesh (Head of Lab, Internal Combustion Engines Lab, IIT-M) I simulated a fuel injection system for methanol-diesel dual fuel CI engines.
