Here is my setup for the internet.
Browser
I like using iCab, it supports most pages that I go to. Even more than Netscape 4.0.8, and has the best customisation than any browser that I have used. Even on the Amiga platform. There is also Java Script support and Java support if using Mac Runtime Java. Further more I have extra ram left over to run other applicaitons like Stuffit expander, Fetch, or ircle. (remember I'm on 4 meg o ram here!)
Internet Chat
"Ircle" works great on the older 030's and is still the best irc client for the Macintosh.
FTP
Fetch ftp client is simple, stable, fast, and I think thats what we are all looking for in an ftp client.
Kewl! But how do I connect?
If running with 8 megs of ram or less I would forget Open Transport.
It just uses too much ram! If you do have like 14 meg o ram or 10
maybee doubled with ramdoubler; than use Opentransport. If you have
that much ram but dont have Open Transport then get System 7.5.3-7.5.5.
The OS is free now and has Opentransport. After installing it go
to Apples web site and Upgrade it!! 1.1.1 should at least be upgraded
to 1.1.2
If you are like me and dont have that much ram but want to be on the NET you have came to the right place! Bellow are a list of System extentions and Controll pannels that one should get.
ConfigPPP 2.0.2 For dialing your Modem (extention and Controll panel)
MacTCP 2.0.2 (extention and controll panel)
Global Village 56k Modem. ATZ&F works for me for the Modem Init. A USR 56k or whatever should work also. Not sure if the Initialization string will work for those modems though. Try at&f, at&f1 also,m but I dont think those will connect you at 56.k
Quck config breakdown:
Go to MacTCP controll pannel and open it. Highlite the PPP icon up top. Click on the "more" button. When that dialog displays check the Server radio button to obtain address from the server (your isp). Now in the lower right hand corner of the dialog it will ansk for a domain name and a ip address. your doamin is usually myispname.net type that in there and to the right of the box it wants the ip address you will need to get this info from your isp. Just call them and ask for the ip address of the dns server and put it in that box. Get the seondary if possible! Click ok and save or whatever it wants you to do. Thats it! for the tcp part of it! dont bother with that other stuff your isp will take care of the rest.
Now go back to controll panels. Open Config PPP. Port name is either modem or printer so pick the one that your modem is plugged into. Click on "Config..." button. Port speed to 56k or whatever you want i would not go under 19k though depending on your setup. Flow controll CTS & RTS seems to work don't know why though? Enter Phone # and Init String for Modem AT&F, ATZ&F, AT&F try one of these. Next click on "Authentication" button and add your username and password.
Thats it! You should now be able to download files from 5.5k to 4.2k a second if you have a 56k modem unless the connection suc*s
