18/03/91 - 05/04/93

Tanglewind was built by Harry Feltham in 1962 using pitch pine planking over seasoned oak frames, to a design by Maurice Griffiths. An inboard diesel engine (Volvo MDIIC) provided plenty of motoring and battery charging power. The rig consisted of spruce spars, galvanized rigging and traditional hank on sails.

At last, our very own yacht, Yippee!!! (March 91')

Tanglewind seen here shortly after we bought her on 18 March, 91'. A lot of fitting out had to be done before we could leave England  (And plenty of sailing to gain experience...)
     See ya later dudes !!

Our departure from Hythe, Southampton on Sunday 28/6/92. Day one of our travels and emotional farewells all round. we sailed along the South Coast to Fowey and then crossed to L'Aberwrach on route to "The Brest Traditional Boat Festival 92".

And, left hand down a bit...

Anyone seen my boat ?

Brest was excellent fun and it was good to see so many different vessels varying in size, nationality and style. After a lot of partying with friends old and new it was time for farewells and off once more. We sailed to Morgat then to Douarnanez, our last French port before crossing Biscay to La Coruna in Northern Spain.

We stopped for a couple of days in Malpica after fouling our propeller on a piece of drifting net. It's a friendly fishing port with very hospitable locals. There is a good beach on the western side of the headland and barbequed sardines and red wine went down well at one of the regular beach parties. We carried on heading south stopping at Laxe, Camarinas, Muros, Villagarcia and Islas Cies ( beautiful uninhabited islands ).Much of this was done in company with Mike Van Gent and Tracey Wood sailing their Catamaran Freeaz.

Malpica a truly superb spot...

Freeaz having to motor (no wind)

Tanglewind, treating us to a great sail !!!

After Cies we sailed on to Bayona and then into Portugal, checking in at Viana do Castello. We stopped at Lexoes, Figuero de Foz, Peniche and Cascais whilst en route to Lisbon. In Cascais it was good to meet up with old friends including Ben and Beth on "Lady of Spain", Gavin and Georgie on "Margaret Wroughton", Malcolm and Susie on "Goosander", Natalie and Robert on "De Rode Beer" and yachts "Viking", "Chrisden", "Renegade",  "Yolaine" and their crews.

Anybody seen my chickens ?

A very, very big monument..

Two diverse views of Lisbon, a typical back street scene and the massive monument to Henry The Navigator on the Rio Tejo. We left Lisbon behind us and carried on to Sines, St.Vincent, Lagos and Vilamoura where we checked out of Portugal. Back into Spain again via Ayamonte, then on to Huelva and Rota where we met up with Freeaz again, Barbate next and a successful beer transfer from Freeaz to Tanglewind was achieved along the way.

Next stop Gibraltar and it was whilst on this trip that we had our best recorded speed over the ground of 9.2 knots (we had the tide with us and a westerly force 6/7 to help though!)

Arriving in Gibraltar

Approaching Marina Bay, Gibraltar 11/10/92. We stayed in Gib for six days and then sailed around the "Rock" to Estepona on the Costa Del Sol.

Tanglewind was sold on the 5/4/93 and it was with very mixed feelings indeed, she had looked after us in all weathers and scenario's and we always felt safe in her, but it was time to move on and we needed a bigger, stronger boat to cross the Atlantic; This is where Kamouraska comes in.....
