The story behind our stay in St.Martin although
complicated is well worth the telling, so here goes; We met a couple of yachties
in Arguineguin, Gran Canaria; Dave and Nancy to be precise on their yacht "Janeve".
We got on very well and were all heading in the same direction i.e. The
Caribbean. Our departure date from Arguineguin was the same and we agreed
to meet up in Grenada and spend Xmas/New year together, so off we went to
Barbados and then to Grenada and no sign of "Janeve" we tried on the
vhf and ssb radio to contact other yachts who made the Atlantic crossing
at the same time to see if they had any news but to no avail. So turn the clock
forward six months and we are in Antigua after cruising the Windwards and
Leewards and by now very broke... We had just enough money to buy provisions
and fuel to get back to the U.K. and nothing else in reserve. Because of this
state of affairs we decided to sail to St.Martin (duty free island) to buy our tobacco
for the trip to England. We were now fully fueled, watered and provisioned and
leaving St.Martin in the morning bound for the Azores en route to England. As we
had Seven U.S. Dollars to our name we decided to have a splurge and go ashore
for our last happy hour drinks in the Caribbean. We got back to Kamouraska to
find a note stuck on our companionway from a third party saying "Hi hope all is well
Dave and Nancy are in
the Lagoon, come and say hello". And
it is all down to our postponing leaving St.Martin until the day after that we didn't
in fact leave until nearly five and a half years later Phew!!!!!!!!
Obviously
jobs were now urgently needed and I spent our first year working for "Sunsail"
as a yacht technician, Kerry meanwhile had started as a barmaid at "Davids"
in Marigot, on the French side of the island. It was here that we met Chris
Coombs, Lee Hallam, Danny Silcock and the boys from Red Stripe Beer. Things
would never be the same again.
After
ten years together we figured that it was time to tie the knot, Anguilla
six miles away was the perfect choice as we have friends there and it is a truly
beautiful island. We had a Sunsail 45' yacht for the week and sailed over to do
the Deed.... On board were myself, Kerry, Martin Ulrick (friend and
photographer), Andy Symons (Best Man) and Lisa Symons (Matron of
Honour).
