| After Hurricanes
Luis,
Marilyn and Bertha we decided that enough is enough. So in the
summer of 97 we sailed south to Grenada for the duration of the hurricane
season . Grenada is far
enough south at 12° to be considered safe (about 99%). |
 |
Our provisioning for the trip was
mostly beer, as it is a hot steamy summer trip. We decided to take about
three weeks to get to Grenada so that we could stop and see islands that
we missed on the way north three years earlier. |
 |
We left St. Martin on 16/06/97. Stopping in St. Eustatius, St. Kitts,
Nevis and Montserrat which was a very sad sight indeed. The continuing
eruptions had just finished destroying Plymouth and Kamouraska was covered
in a layer of thick ash during our stay. We were saddened by the plight of
the local population and particularly angered by the attitude of the
British Government which was basically "Sod off". |

Our home for the next few
months, Hog Island on the South coast of Grenada. We met up with lots of
friends, both old and new and had a wonderful time here.

| The nearest civilization
to Hog Island is Lower Woburn and the friendly establishment called
Nimrods, it is a rum shop/general store and is run by Hugh Nimrod and his
wife Bernadette. Many a happy time was spent here enjoying a rum or nine.
But some of the dinghy trips back to Kamouraska were adventures in their
own right, especially as our inflatable had a big split in the floor at
the time... |

Hog Island is small,
uninhabited (by people) and great fun on BBQ day every Sunday. The photos
above were taken at a birthday party on the Island for Carrie, who with
her partner Mike had also sailed from St.Martin for the summer in Grenada.
The music was provided by Carries daughter, Lou on flute, her boyfriend
Ben on guitar, Mike on sax and many other people singing along. It was a
great success and the food was wonderful, a really fun time for the
yachties and locals together. Plenty of rum was
consumed and at the end of it Kamouraska was only fifty feet away!! Very
nice too...
The time we spent in Grenada that year was known by all
there as "The Summer Of Rum". Grenada is without doubt one of my
favourite Islands, the locals are friendly, courteous and helpful, the
Island is beautiful and most things are inexpensive to buy. The local
fishing is good too, many a night we had fresh snapper for tea. The
trip back to St.Martin was uneventful, we caught up with a friend of ours
J.C. in Martinique and eventually arrived back in St.Martin on 9/10/97
ready for a return to work and some much needed cash. All in all a great
"Summer of rum". |
