2ACV14: Mother's Day
First UK airing: Sky One, 7:00pm, 16-7-00
"Hell hath no fury like the vast
robot armies of a woman scorned."
I've always liked robots. The first actual book (ie,
one that didn't have any pictures in it) I ever read was Isaac
Asimov's 'I, Robot', at some ridiculously early age, and I'll
always remember being hugely disappointed to learn that robots
didn't really exist. Roll on the day when we get real 'bots wandering
about the place -- and in all honesty, I think I'd prefer to
have a few meks with attitude like Bender than servile crawlers
like Robin Williams in Bicentennial Man. So even when they're
clanking about threatening humanity and ignoring Asimov's laws,
I still think robots are pretty cool.
So this episode really hit the spot. More robots than
you could possibly imagine (nearly every one that's appeared
in the series so far, and more besides), and on the rampage too!
Killer appliances -- your hallmark of great comedy. There were
loads of great robot-related gags this episode, the standouts
being yet another crushing (literally) humiliation for Tinny
Tim, the whole 'see through the eyes of a Bender unit' routine
and the Do The Right Thing reference. The picture of Bender at
one month old was excellent, too.
In actual news, or at least away from robots, top
comedy came from things like the freeze-frame settings on Mom's
Universal Robot Controller, the Professor's medallion and, best
of all, Morbo's Vermin of the Week award. I reckon there's room
for real-life newsreaders like that.
Mom and her sons were used a lot better this time
than in their first appearance. Mom got some backstory that helped
move her away from just being Monty Burns in thigh boots (ugh,
what a revolting thought); in fact, she may be even more evil
than Mr Burns, but deep down, all she wants is love. Aww. But
did we have to see it? Ewwwwww! Actually, it was pretty
funny -- embarrassing sexual situations always make for good
comedy, and it made a change to see the Professor at the heart
of the action rather than doddering on the sidelines.
A quick question for non-UK viewers -- was something
cut? Sky's broadcast had a weird jump in the music right after
Mom says "...the only man I ever loved walked out on me."
But now... there's only one more episode left in the
series. Aaaaarghhhhhh!
