Braga has around 60,000 habitants today and is one of the most ancient towns in Portugal.
Founded in 296 BC by the name Bracara Augusta, was later the main Roman station in northern
Lusitania, being an important hub of communication.
Braga is sometimes known as the 'Portuguese Rome' and in same way, the town is called
the religious capital of Portugal.
At times during Portuguese history, the Church (Roman Catholic) has wielded more power than
the monarchy (until 1910) with Braga at the center of this influence.
However, Portugal is still a strongly spiritual nation and Braga's Holly Week (Semana Santa)
celebrations at Easter in particular are a striking testament to the depth of religious
feeling here. There are a lot of Roman Catholic Churches in Braga what we usually to say
that we have one by street. There are Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Manueline amongst
an extraordinary diversity of styles, which somehow come together into a harmonious whole.
Five kilometers outside Braga on the hill to the east is an ornate baroque terraced staircase
of more than 1000 steps leading up to the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary from 15 Century
(also approached by a funicular (elevador) of 1882). Each of the stairway landings has a
fountain each one symbolized different things. At each corner of the stairway are chapels
describing the Life of Jesus Christ. Just 3km up at the top of the hill, is the Sanctuary of
Sameiro (to Nossa Senhora do Sámeiro) the second most venerated shrine in the country
after Fátima. Braga has also very colorful of gardens ornamented with beautiful water
fountain like the Jardim de Santa Barbara.
