Paul and Casey's Great Adventure - Part 6
We left the Hoover Dam and began the long trip back home. Of course at that time we didn't feel like we were heading home, because we were going through Arizona, which has about 10 million natural wonders you can stop and see. We stopped at the Grand Canyon, which of course is one of the 7 wonders of the world and really big and easy to see. But one place nearby which is easy to overlook is Sunset Crater. It was the site of a huge volcanic eruption back in the 1100's, and the whole area is covered with black volcanic rock. The Sunset Crater region is a huge area of volcanic activity. Every large hill in the area, in fact, is a dormant or inactive volcano.
Pictures don't give you an impression of the sheer size of the Grand Canyon. I couldn't even venture to say how far away the horizon is in these pictures.
Casey at one of the many viewing points which surround the Canyon. There are also mule rides and hiking trails which lead to the bottom, but you need to spend a couple of days here and camp out to do all that.
Lenox Crater, which is up this huge, steep-ass hill in the Sunset Crater area.
Sunset Crater. It's on top of that hill. I'd have liked a better look but you aren't allowed to walk off the trails here because you will affect the natural balance of life in the the area or something.
Lenox Crater - The coloration of the Sunset Crater area made these some of the nicest pics I've ever taken anywhere.
