| Paul and Casey's Great Adventure - Part 7 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Grand Canyon is clearly the most spectacular sight in Arizona, but we made quite a few other stops while were were there. We visited the meteor crater, where a long, long time ago a huge meteor smashed into the earth and killed all life within 500 miles of the area. There was, of course, a massive hole in the ground which was much larger than even the site of a nuclear blast, and there was also a museum nearby which showed the process of the impact, and how that impact compared with others throughout history. There was also this computer simulator where you could type in the size of a meteor, the speed, and the angle of entry into the atmosphere, and the simulator would tell you the effect your meteor would have on the planet. We also went to the Petrified forest, which was much, much bigger than the one we saw in South Dakota. There were petrified trunks stretching as far as the eye could see. Our last stop in Arizona, and in fact our last stop before going back east, was the Painted Desert. It's a huge expanse of different colored rocks and sand. If you look in one direction, the landscape is all grey. If you look in another direction, it's all red. |

| The outside of the meteor crater - the rim. I forget how big the crater is, but you can tell from here that the meteor was serious. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The grey section of the painted desert. This section had a cool name, like 'Little Cone Tops', or something. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The 'Agate Bridge' at the petrified forest. The petrified tree, which naturally formed the bridge originally, was reinforced with cement in the early 1900's. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The petrified forest is acres and acres of scenery like this. Everything in this picture that isn't ground is a piece of petrified wood. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
