Who We Are

Pawprints of Shreveport

Pawprints is affilated with both the United States Dog Agility Association and the American Kennel Club. The club sponsors four trials yearly: A USDAA trial in March, an AKC trial in May, a USDAA trial in November and an AKC trial in December. The next trial date is posted on Page Four of this website, with a link to a sneak peak of the 2003 trial schedule. Test schedules are usually mailed out from four to six weeks prior to closing date. If you'd like to be added to the Pawprints mailing list, just send an e-mail request using the links on Page 4.

Where in the world is Shreveport?

Shreveport, Louisiana is located in the northwest corner of the state. We're about three to four hours east of Dallas, four to five hours northeast of Houston and three to four hours west of Mississippi, depending if you're coming from Vicksburg or Jackson. I mention these spots, because most of our competitors comes from these areas. If you're traveling within the state, and don't know where we are, well . . . we're three to four hours north of Lafayette. Add another hour to come from Baton Rouge and an additional hour to come from New Orleans.

Meeting and Practice Sites

Pawprints of Shreveport club meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. Site of the meeting varies, and is usually a restaurant in the Shreveport/Bossier City area. Guests are welcome.

Club newsletters are published at least quarterly and include the club minutes, brags and upcoming test information. Pawprints also maintains a private Yahoo Group mailing list, which updates members and potential members of news and information.

Practice is held weekly on Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 p.m at River Point Racing and Equestrian Center in Haughton, Louisiana. The practice area is covered and bathrooms are available.

Pawprints is not offering classes at this time. Non-members are welcome to come to practice, but are asked to come without their dog at the first visit. Our practice site is a working race horse facility and handlers must maintain control of their dogs at all times. When the dog is not working, it is expected to be kept leashed or kenneled and away from the horses.

Our Friends and Neighbors

I've been with dog agility for almost fifteen years and have had the pleasure of knowing and working with so many wonderful people in this sport. I'd like to introduce you to some of the clubs in our area:

  • BARK
  • Brandon Agility Running K-9's is Mississippi's first agility club. It's headquarters is located in Pearl, Mississippi, near Jackson. Talk about a great group of agility enthusiasts! Although not currently offering regular events, BARK remains very active through the BARK ON THE ROAD program. In 2001, they're already scheduled to host a trial near New Orleans at Lagniappe Farms in Folsum, LA. For more information, check out their wonderful website, which is linked above or Contact Susan Burton at Susan.

Dallas Agility Working Group is one of many very active dog agility clubs in Texas. They offer both AKC and USDAA trials. Check out their really neat website, maintained by Chuck and Jo Unbehaun. Jo is one of the sweetest folk I've met on the agility circuit and her husband is one heck of a webmaster and woodworker. [G] You can contact them at [email protected] or contact Elizabeth Evans at [email protected]

This is just one of many dog agility clubs located in Houston, Texas. They're also the club which hosts the agility portion of the annual AstroHall World of Dogs in Houston. This is quite an event, and if you get a chance to go, do so! Conformation, obedience, agility, flyball and more merchandising booths than you can wag a tail at. For additional information, contact Penny Winegartner at [email protected].

In April, 1999, Pawprints members were happy to assist at the 1999 Australian Shepherd Nationals in Marshall, Texas. Those nice folk offered an *All Breed* agility competition as part of their very busy schedule. Barbara Wilson has set up this site for her club. Check it out and let her know how good she did. [email protected]

I'll be happy to include your club among my friends. Just e-mail me with your permission and address information. Patt Elmore
