William B. Patrick was one of the charter members of Eyota Tribe of Red Men, and once played in a Red Men's band, which was directed by Claude Brooks. Born at Downardsville 21 Jan 1872, William Patrick came early with his parents, Thomas Benton and Margeret Downard Patrick, to live in Wellston. They lived for a short time in north Wellston in the vicinity of what was then called "Bean Row". A few years later the Patrick family moved into what they now regard as the old home place, located on East Eighth Street and later the home of Williams brother, George Patrick, and wife. At that time the Patrick house was in what was known as Cobb Orchard, and was one of the few houses in that section of town. William went to school at the old Central building and remembers that Alice Watt, later Mrs. I.J. McMillen, was one of his teachers. At the age of 14 he quit school and started working in the mines, as did so many boys of his generation. His father was not well and he helped support the family. He was first employed at the Center Valley Mine, bailing water out of a wet entry, for fifty cents a day, when he was so small that his "dinner bucket nearly dragged on the ground." He never opened a pay envelope himself until he was 21 years old, always turning it over to the family. He later worked at various mines, and at one time was employed in a brick yard that was located on the site of the present west end playground. He was married 9 Jan 1901, in Wellston to Miss Fanny Tucker, a daughter of W.E. and Mary E. Tucker. The Patrick's built their own home in 1901 with the late A.B. Leach as the contractor. For 43 years they made their home at their present residence on Rhode Island Avenue, with the exception of a year spent in Chicago, and three years during World War I, when they lived near the present Austin Powder plant at Elko where William was the manager of the Elko mine. He has been unable to work since 1942, when he had his leg severely injured in a mine at Coolville, in the Hocking Valley. William and Fanny were the parents of five children, one of whom died in infancy. Their only daughter, Mary E. Wilshire, died in 1947. The remaining children are Herbert Patrick of Jackson, William H. Patrick of Dayton, and Grant Patrick of Athens.1 He married Fanny Tucker, daughter of W. Edward Tucker & Mary E. Ward, 9 Jan 1901 in Wellston, Ohio. Born 1 Mar 1879 in Jackson Co., Ohio. Died 1964 in Ohio. Buried in Ridgewood Cemetery; Wellston, Ohio. They had the following children:
