31st Dec...

The first thing in the morning, I checked the news... still snowing in NY... but the snow was expected to stop by afternoon... so good news...

spent some part of the morning cleaning the driveway...

We left Pocono at around 1.45... expected to reach NY by about 4...

We reached NY by 3.45... NY was a changed place... as we crossed the bridge (George Washington Bridge) connecting Manhattan & NJ, all I saw of the Hudson was a layer of ice...

do visit:- http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/intrepid/

USS Intrepid...

This ship causes a lot of damage to the Japanese in the 2nd world war...

Just like our VIKRANT, these guys had converted the Intrepid into a museum...

We parked our car some where close to Wall Street & started walking.... we walked pass Battery Park & reached South Street Sea Port... we spent some time there till the sunset... then, we took a boat to Staten Island... this boat passes very close to the Statue of Liberty & its adjoining islands... btw, Statue of Liberty is closed in winter...

Wall Street & surrounding area...
I donno what this clock is called.. but its really HUGE

Some parts of wall street were blocked due to snow....you rarely get to see this part of wall street so deserted... infact you would be fined heavily for parking on this street... but due to three cumulative reasons -31st Dec, Sunday & snow - noone bothered....

On the return journey from Staten, I saw one of the most scenic view of the Manhattan skyline (at night)... unfortunatly, all the pictures taken during the boat journey (Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Manhattan Skyline, etc) didnt develop well...

Liberty camera:- (http://www.sccorp.com/cam/) online real-time pictures of Statue of Liberty...

guys, you must try this:- (http://www.nj.com/nycskyline/) this site actually gives you a partial view of the mahattan skyline.. there is an option where you can see live video of the skyline... see it to believe it....

South Street Sea Port.... the place makes you feel as if you are in some part of Europe...

During Divali, many indians (in NY) come to South Port to celebrate... lot of fireworks.....

The famous Brooklyn Bridge....

The Statue of Liberty is not seen here.. the photo was actually ment for that :-))) its somewhere close to the inverted U that you see in the center of the image....

btw, the water body to the left is East River & the one straight ahead is the Hudson River...

After the boat ride, we walked to the Rockefeller Center... Just across the street is the famous NY Cathedral..

The New York Cathedral..

The Cathedral.. is a really huge structure... I tried every stunt to make it fit in one photo.. but couldnt... it was beautifully decoreated for Christmas & New Year Celebrations...

Inside, the walls had paintings depicting stories about Christ & Mother Marry....

Rockefeller Center....

Mr Rockefeller made a LOT of money in oil industry... there one full block in Manhattan that belongs to him... the entire estate is being passed on from generation to generation...

Every year, they search for the tallest Christmas tree along the north-east states & erect in front of the Rockefeller Building...

There's a skating ground just at the base of the building.....

visit:- http://www.nyctourist.com/rock_center1.htm

Just like the Empire State & World Trade, the Rockefeller building is one of the tallest in Manhattan.... I even walked 3 streets to get the building in one shot but the damm thing just didnt fit!!!!

The Christmas tree is one of the main tourist attractions of New York during Christmas-New Year time...

Time Square...

We meet Unnati & Prashant at Rockefeller....

Rockefeller is on 50th Street 5th Avenue....& Time Square is Broadway and 46th Street.. Broadway is the merger of 6th & 7th Avenue... our next destination - Time Square... all the streets going to TS were blocked... we were made to walk backward (in terms of streets).... the place was so crowded that finally on 53rd Street, 7th Avenue, we got a place to stand....later, we were told that about half a million ppl had come to TS that night....

For the first 15-20min, we were excited by the fact that we were gonna watch NY from TS.. but soon, it was clear that we had to stand there in the cold (-5deg C) for another 3hrs... suddenly, 3hrs was a LONG time....

For the next 3hrs.. there was NOTHING to do.. but just stand & wait.... shiver.. I was having 4layers on.. but still shivering.. some ppl even started exercising/jogging on the spot...

Caps :-)))))

The New Year Ball...

do you see a small yellow colored dot just above the vertical building in the center.. thats the new year ball... at midnight, the ball comes down & the new year celebrations begin....

As time passes, the crowd found its own way of enjoying.. even the smallest incident - passing of any NYPD chopper, flashing of lights from the new year ball, laser show or even residents peeking from their windows - was enough to make the crowd wild.... ppl were having a FUN....

The bottom photo... 30sec before new year.... see the display just below the ball showing 29sec....

Happy New Year....

As the clock struck 00:00, there was a flash on all the display screens... Note the ball is no longer seen in the photos...

The sky was lit-up with colorful of fireworks...

Lasers formed pattern in the sky...

The whole scene was just too amazing...

the crowd went berserk....
