Stayed home on 1st.. had a hair cut... too tired to go out anywhere else..

On 2nd, we went to Time Square, Grand Central Station & the United Nations Building.....

Time Square...

This is the vertical building that had the New Year's Ball... the vertical pole (just above 2001) in the bottom photo held the New Year's Ball....

The tip of the Empire State building is seen in the center of the picture....

do visit:- http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/

The other side of Time Square...
All the building on Time Square have some form of display unit on them...
BA concord....

GrandCentral Station & Chrysler Building..

do visit:- http://www.thebee.com/HH/grandcentral.htm

The bridge in the picture directly enters GrandCentral... cars/cabs enter the building thru this bridge.. there's a tunnel inside the building... the exit is thru MetLife building which is internally connected to GrandCentral....

GrandCentral Station...

The ceiling is painted like an evening sky with gilded stars and constellations, it allows New Yorkers never get to see in the real nighttime sky above the Big Apple!!

Thru GrandCentral one can walk into the MetLife Building....

The entrance of MetLife is well has some beautiful art-work & artificial gardens...

If you're meeting someone at Grand Central, it'll probably be by the famous four-sided, brass clock atop the Information Booth in the center of the Main Concourse.

United Nations....

From GrandCentral, we walked towards the UN building (42nd Street 1st Avenue)... we passes Madison Avenue, Park Avenue.. then Lexington... 3rd & 2nd Avenue... finally reaching the UN building which is along the East River.... btw, as I was passing these Avenues, I tried hard to find any shop or mall that was named Park Avenue... there was none.... also, there is no 4th Avenue... after 5th Avenue, there was Madison, Park & Lexington... part of the reason I guess is since most of these 'named' Avenues endup or are forced to terminate into some building...

The UN extends several streets....

Chrysler Building & the Japanese gift to the UN (not clearly seen)... its a garden bell... has some symbolic importance in Japan..

The Security Council...

There was some maintenance work going on when we went there... the painting in the center is a gift from one of the Scandinavian country... the painting symbolizes the role UN has played in world peace...colors in the painting go from dark to light from bottom to top... the top part symbolizes the world after the establishment of UN... the bottom part is the world during worldwar....

Member of the security council can listen to the discussion in 6 diff languages... English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese & Japanese (or German I'm not sure)... each chair is equipped with an instrument that can be adjusted to the specific language... 6 translators sit in the glass windows in the photo...

The Socio-Economic Council...

Note the ceiling in this room... the architect of this room left the ceiling incomplete to symbolizes that the work of this council is always incomplete...?!?!?

The Trusteeship Council (No longer active)...

This council was set up with the idea of de-colonising the world.... but since colonism doesn't exist anymore.. the work of this council is suspended indefinitely....

The General Assembly.....

India sits somewhere in the middle in the row immediately to the left of the TV camera..

Another painting gifted from one of the Scandinavian country...

Gift from Thailand...

This is a replica of the Golden Boat.. it is the boat in which the Thai king/prime-Minster sits... even the replica was so long, that I couldn't fit it in one shot....

Chinese Gift..

This is an ivory structure resembling two towns in central china.. the entire structure is carved in pure ivory... 9 artist spent several months in completing this... the structure shows a bridge connecting the two towns - a symbol of friendship.... the structure shows items in great detail...

US Gift...

this is a mosaic painting representing humanity... oneness... equality...

the painting uses several thousand mosaic tiles of different color... 2 artist spent about 6 months finishing this...
