Deimos is the smaller and outermost of the two natural satellites of the planet Mars, the other being Phobos. Deimos has a mean radius of 6.2 km (3.9 mi) and takes 30.3 hours to orbit Mars. Deimos is 23,460 km (14,580 mi) from Mars, much further than Mars's other moon, Phobos. Deimos is a dark body that appears to be composed of C-type surface materials, similar to that of asteroids found in the outer asteroid belt. Deimos was discovered on Aug. 11, 1877 by Asaph Hall.
In Greek mythology, Deimos is the son of Ares and Aphrodite and the brother of Phobos. Deimos is the personification of dread and terror, It only seems natural when you consider that his father is the god of war. The Roman version of him was called Metus or Formido.
Earth's moon is a great deal larger: it's diameter is about 2104 miles, while Deimos is smaller at around 3.9 miles. Deimos orbit much closer to Mars than our moon does. The moon is about 238,000 miles away from the Earth, or about 30 times the earth diameter. Deimos orbit much closer to Mars than our moon does.
