Firescreen Project page
This is a record of my current "work in progress".  It is my largest project to date and was started approximately 6 years ago when we found an old battered firescreen at a local flea market while living in Denmark.

I originally thought a few seasonal flowers would make the screen a lovely addition to our home.  As the design process took place my imagination took flight and I finally decided that I would cover the whole screen with stitching.  After much research, and many false starts, I finally started stitching when we moved to Prague in 1999.  I have worked and mounted two panels so far and am pleased with the results.  I have decided to complete the final two panels simultaneously on a large tapestry frame.  On this page you can look at what I have finished and keep up to date with my progress.

For this project I have used 12 count natural colour tapestry canvas.  The background is stitched in Appletons tapestry yarn in three shades and the flowers are worked in cross-stitch using three strands of DMC Embroidery Floss.  The centre of many of the flowers are beaded to add to the texture create more detail.  I have used only full stitches with no backstitch outline.  This has been a real labout of love.  Please remember I have no artistic training and have used many sources to design this I will upon completion give a full list of credits.
Here below are the Spring and Summer panels mounted in the frame.  I have also included a full discription of the flowers depicted here please look at the individual panels photographed below.  There are also some close-up shots of the bead detail.  I will be adding from time to time photographs of the Autumn and Winter screens as they progress.
Spring Panel
Summer Panel
The apple blossom was taken from a Cross Stitch magazine and adapted to suit my needs.  The centre of the blossoms are beaded
The daffodils and narcisus was inspired by a design from Eva Rosenstand again I had to adapt the original design.
These pale pink tulips were a combination of two designs from two different magazines.  The shape from one and the colours from the other.
The lovely spring crocus I drew myself from a gardening book.
These bluebells were designed using a photograph my husband took while out walking in our local park in Copenhagen.
Primroses were everywhere in our Italian garden but I used a magazine design to help me with these.  The centre of these are beaded.
Cherries always mean summer to me and this design was adapted from a magazine.
The sunflower was the first design completed for the panels.  I used an imported image from Encarta.  The centre is beaded in brown and black.
These roses were one of the original patterns on my PMaker CD.  Again I made changes and beaded the centres.  The subtle shading of this makes it a favourite of mine.
The Iris were designed by myself again using a photgraph in a gardening book.
I looked at many poppy designs and finally combined many to get the effect I wanted.  The concentration of beads in the centres give a lovely contrast.
Pictured here is the beadwork on the sunflower and poppy designs.  You can also see clearly from these examples the contrast of the cotton thread with the wool background worked in tent stitch.
When viewing these pages please realise that while I try to give credit to all the sources I have used this work is done for my own enjoyment and hopefully the enjoyment of others when they see it.  Either in someones home or on these pages.  Some errors may occur and I apologise for them.  I will always answer any questions or queries about my work and would love to have your comments.  My e-mail address is [email protected]

Pictured here are plums which are the second item on the Autumn panel.  At the time of writing this I have since completed more than halfway on both panels and am hoping to be able to add a few more photos.  Who knows soon you may even get the completed work - Watch This Space..................
