This man was 50 years old in 1860, just before the Civil War broke out. At that time, according to the 1860 Census Report for Caroll Parish, in real-estate and slaves (70), he was worth approximately 2.4 million dollars in today's money.
William Cromartie Currie was born 6/17/1810; died 10/2/1876. (Obituary below)
His parents were Catherine Cromartie, (born 7/8/1780 in Bladen County, North Carolina), and Alexander Currie. Catherine was the daughter of
William Cromartie, (b. May 31, 1731 in So. Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland - d. Sept. 21, 1807, Bladen Co., NC). He was said to have been the second son of the Earl of Ross & Cromartie (Cromarty). (See His Will) We have no information on Alexander Currie at this time.
The Currie family migrated to Mississippi.
W.C. was first married, 4/14/1836, to Adaline Whitaker, (11/2/1818 - 8/28/1849)
From this marriage two children survived to adulthood: Abram ("Abe")Whitaker Currie, (3/18/1838 - 9/27/1889) and Huldah A. Devine Currie, (6/6/1848 - 4/3/1934). W.C. moved to Carroll Parish, Louisiana with Adaline and their small children under 5 years of age
Three children were born prior to Huldah but did not survive to adulthood.

On September 3rd, 1850, W. C. Currie married Hester Ann Selser Richards.
A marriage license was filed in the Parish of Carroll, State of Louisiana
