CHAPTER TWO
PURPOSE, MISSION, AND VISION
2.1 PURPOSE STATEMENT
"The Purpose of NYI shall be to lead youth into a relationship with Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord and to establish them as His disciples, characterized by a life of holiness expressed through devotion, worship, fellowship, stewardship, and witness (Matthew 28:19-20). This shall be achieved by: This is the Purpose Statement laid out by Article II of the Constitutions For Nazarene Youth International. Being a chapter of the NYI, we wholeheartedly affirm this as our purpose.
2.2 MISSION STATEMENT
Trintiy Youth Ministries exists to guide teens from the greater Decatur area on the journey of eight steps, from sampler to sower.
2.3 KEY VERSES
Two Passages of Scripture guide the mission and vision of Trinity Youth Ministries:
2.3.1 1 Timothy 4:12
"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." (NIV) This is the Motto for the General NYI
2.3.2 2 Peter 1:5-8
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (NIV) These verses guide our vision as a ministry.
2.4 VISION STATEMENT
Trinity Youth Ministries guides teens on the journey of the eight steps by encouraging and equipping them to make the key commitments at each step of the way.
The Step
Key Characteristics
Key Commitment
Sampler
  • Have a sense that there is more to life than the visible
  • Seek satisfaction at the supernatural smorgasbord
  • Typically syncretistic in there approach to religion
Selection: We invite samplers to "come and see," to pause in their search for meaning and value, and to take a closer look at the claims of Christianity
Seeker Samplers who are willing to take the time to investigate Christianity typically come with three basic questions:
  • Is it real? (Does Christianity really make a difference in people's lives?)
  • How does it apply to me?
  • How do I get plugged in?
Confession: We invite seekers who have found the answers to their three most basic questions to get plugged in, to confess their sins and to seek God's forgiveness and a new relationship through the Spirit.
Singer It is our firm belief that both Christian experience and the witness of scripture demonstrates that the natural response to redemption is an attitude of thanksgiving and praise. Singers are those who are learning to express these God-tuned attitudes in worship. Expression: We invite singers to make the commitment to let their feelings out, to express the thanksgiving and joy inside them in worship and praise.
Student Students are those who enter into discipling programs in order to learn more about the Christian life and the claims of Scripture. Education: We invite students to make the commitment to enrich their minds with the study of God's Word.
Supporter Supporters are those who are longing for meaningful relationships that will help them grow and hold them accountable. Union: We invite supporters to find the relationships they are looking for by becoming memberS of a small group and, in return, to support the larger church through membership and stewardship.
Searcher Searchers have experienced the grace of salvation and have studied the scriptures, seeking to live according to the pattern of Christ. They realize there must be more to Christianity than repentance and forgiveness. Emulation: We invite searchers to search after the heart of God and seek to emulate him. But we also realize that this is not something that can be programmed. Just as physical health rises out of healthy habits, so too emulation, the hallmark of spiritual health, rises out of healthy spiritual habits. We seek to help teens emulate the Father by teaching and encouraging the development of healthy spiritual disciplines.
Servant Servants understand that they have been given much, and as such, they have much to give. They have a desire to serve God, but often are uncertain about their own gifts and the opportunities that exist for using those gifts. Integration: We invite servants to become fully integrated into the ministry of the church, using their gifts and talents in service to other people.
Sower Christians value their relationship with Christ and want to see others find the same joy and fullness they have found. But often they feel uncomfortable about witnessing and uncertain about how to share their faith. Evangelization: We encourage and equip sowers to overcome their fears and uncertainties, challenging them to become actively involved in sharing their faith with others.
