| The Sign Of Jonah
-Pg 2 Matt. 27:62 - "NOW THE NEXT DAY (emphasis added) that followed the day of preparation . . . . " A very sincere reading of the text indicates that Joseph of Arimatha laid Jesus' body in the tomb and rolled the stone in place just before six P.M., when the Day of Preparation was over (Wednesday) and the Feast of Passover started. (Thursday.) The first day of Feast of Passover is an ANNUAL SABBATH. The day it came on annually varied as does our Christmas and birthdays. That year, 31 A.D., it came on Thursday. There are various computer programs by which this is determinded. The Day of Preparation was on 13th of Nisan and the Passover started on 14th of Nisan. The day of the week Passover came on in Egypt or 100 B.C. or 100 A.D., is irrelavent, as the day of the week varied from year to year. Read Lev. 23:4-11 and Exodus 12:1-14. A close reading of ALL four accounts of the Gospel reveals that since the women watched Joseph of Arimatha bury Jesus' body "and the Sabbath (annual High Sabbath), drew on, they did not have time to go purchase spices to anoint Jesus' body. They obviously purchased the spices on Friday, the day after the ANNUAL SABBATH and the day BEFORE THE WEEKLY SABBATH. They apparently returned to the tomb Sunday morning, not realizing the Savior had risen, on schedule, at the end of "three days and three nights." It is to be noted that when Mary, mother of Jesus first saw Him, she thought He was the Gardner. John 20:15. This would indicate it was dark. Luke 23:54-56 tells us that the Sabbath (High Sabbath) was approaching, and the women saw how Jesus' body was laid. Luke tells us they made ready the spices and ointments. But he does not tell us when. We find this in Mark. Mark relates the same exact event of the women seeing where Joseph of Aremetha laid Jesus' body. Mark 15:42-47. Then Mark continues in 16:1 - "When the Sabbath (High Sabbath) was past Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James, and Salome, had bought spices that they might come and anoint Him." (Parenthesis added). It is important to remember that the Scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign. He answered, ". . . an evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall be no sign given it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas (Jonah). For as Jonas was THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of Man be THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS in the heart of the earth." Matt. 12:38-40. (emphasis added) A Friday night crucifixion and a Sunday morning resurrection does not meet the SIGN OF JONAH test. That is only one and a half days or 36 hours! Matthew brings out an interesting point, most fail to see. "In the end of the Sabbath as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre." Matt. 28:1 The Berry Greek-English lexicon says the word translated DAWN should actually read DUSK. In which case the verse would read: "In the end of the Sabbath as it began to DUSK toward the first day of the week." Actually to use the word "dawn" to mean sun rise is incorrect. "Dawn" actually is referring to the beginning of something; i.e. "dawn of the iron age"; or "the dawn of the nuclear age"; or "the dawn of the computer age." Dusk is always in the evening as it is getting dark. In studying Christ's 3 days in the grave, as well as other subjects, much is gained in viewing Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as overlays as when we use an over head projector. We need all four accounts of the Gospel to get the complete picture of what is being said or is happening. The graphic at the top of the next page will help."
