The Sign Of Jonah

Satan's intent from the Garden of Eden to now has been to derail God's Scheme of Redemption of our fallen race. He tried every conceivable means to prevent the birth  of God's only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. As we enter the accounts of the Gospel, we find that Satan tried to induce a miscarriage with the ride on a beast of burden to Bethlehem to pay taxes. Then he tried to stop Him with disease by causing the Baby Christ to be born in a stable with animals.

Later Satan tried to conquer Jesus through temptation, even offering to give Him all the kingdoms of the world. Jesus Conquered Satan with scripture, rejecting a short cut. Later, in the Garden, Satan tried to cause Jesus to bleed to death as He prayed. Then, in a last ditch effort, Satan even tried to rescue Jesus through Pilate's wife's pleading to let Him go. Every effort was made to prevent the cross for our redemption.

But, thank God, our victorious Savior came through every situation as a Masterful Warrior. Finally comes the last week of Jesus' sojourn on this planet as The Good Shepherd seeking to redeem His lost sheep. First, we see Jesus and His triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding a donkey (KJV says an Ass) on Sunday before the Passover, which was on Thursday. Matt. 21:1; Mark 11:1 and Luke 19:29.

Then we find Jesus, on Tuesday. In Matt. 26:2, Jesus says, " . . . . after TWO DAYS (emphasis added) is the feast of the Passover, and the Son of Man is betrayed and crucified." This is two days before the annual Feast of Passover. Matt. 26:20, 26 - 28 - "Now when EVEN WAS COME (emphasis added) He sat down with the twelve."  "As they were eating Jesus took the bread and blessed it and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body." See also Mark 14:22 and Luke 22:19. This being in the evening, is past 6 PM, making it Wednesday, Jewish time, which is the Day of Preparation. Matt. 26:30 they sang a hymn and went out into the mount of olives. Verses 47 - 56, Judas with soldiers came to arrest Jesus. Please note that this is still the Day of Preparation. Unswerved, God's plan from the foundations of the world is still on track.

Notice that Jesus said He could call more than 12 legions of angels. But, he declared, the scriptures MUST be fulfilled. Matt. 26:53-54, 56. God's eternal plan was still on track and could not be altered or delayed. All night Jesus is cursed, spit in His face, beaten and whipped.  Finally, Matt. 27:1 "When the morning was come . . . " Still the Day of Preparation, until 6 P.M. See also Mark 15:1 and John 18:28.

After more scourging and beating, mocking Him with a scarlet robe, a crown of thorns, more spitting on Him, releasing of Barabbas,  He was taken out to be crucified.  Matt. 27:27 - 31. From the 6th hour to the 9th hour darkness was over all the land. Matt. 27:45. This is during the time the head of each house hold roasts a sacrificial lamb over an open fire. But the darkness prevented this, as Jesus, the Lamb of God was now our sacrifice. Burnt offerings will no longer be required, as Jesus our Sacrificial Lamb has taken the punishment for us all! At the 9th hour Jesus cried with a loud voice. Vs 46. Then again Jesus cried with a loud voice and died. Vs 50. See Mk 15:37; Lk. 23:46; John 19:30. The Eternal Scheme of Redemption is still on schedule, as Jesus declared in John: "It is finished!"

Matt. 27:57 - "When even was come, there came a rich man of Arimatha, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple." Vs 58, he asked for Jesus' body. Vs 59 the body is wrapped in linen. Vs 60 Joseph laid Jesus' body in his own tomb. The body had to be removed from the cross and entombed before the annual or HIGH SABBATH began. John 19:31. Luke 23 relates the same event and finalizes with: "And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on." Vs 54. John weighs in on the subject with: "And it was the preparation of the Passover and about the sixth hour." John 19:14.

Matt. 27:61 - "And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre."
