How it All Started
Shreveport's culture has rarely been thought of as a true Louisianan culture, more often than not, people compare it to Texas cities than South Louisiana cities like New Orleans or Baton Rouge. However, in 1984 a group of adventurous Shreveporters met in the Downtown Shreveport Unlimited office and decided to bring a little Cajun culture to North Louisiana by hosting one of Louisiana's biggest pastimes, the crawfish boil. This would not be just any crawfish boil, but the granddaddy of them all. They called it Mudbug Madness and the two day festival that was started then has grown into a four day blowout, complete with Cajun, Zydeco, Blues, and Jazz artists, great contests, and all the mouth watering crawfish you can handle.
Held each Memorial Day weekend, it is one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Events drawing over 56,000 people per day. Truly, we now have a bit of the rich Louisiana cultural heritage alive in Shreveport, Louisiana.
