The medium would receive answers to questions through the use of a board reprinted with letters and words.  The earliest board dates back to ancient China and a similar board was used by Greek philosopher Pythagoras and his followers.  This device today is known as a Ouija Board.
Most modern Ouija Boards include the letters of the alphabet, the numerals 0-9 and the words "yes" and "no".  A small instrument, called a planchette, a palm-sized., triangular shaped wooden platform - is set on the board.
One or more people rest their finger-tips on the planchette and someone asks a question.  The planchette, animated of spirit impulses, begins to move from letter to letter, spelling out a message.  Spiritualists claim that spirits move the planchette.
