Listed below are two software programs that can assist you on working with nutrition and both offer a trial use period for accessing if a program is right for you. There are plenty of other programs out on the market, so this is not a conclusive list of what is available only what peaked my interest enough to download and then tried to run through the trial period to see what they had to offer. Besure to check below for additional pages.

Personal Training Workstation(PTWorkstation) a program that runs on Windows, MAC OS X, and Linux provides a 30 days fully functional trial for download. You can track your workouts, diet, supplements, measurements, is designed for fitness enthusiasts, trainers, and bodybuilders and one of the few programs that support the Linux operating system environment. The cost of the program as of August 2004 is $30 for download and $40 for CD-ROM. In the dietary section you can track through colorful charts your calories, protein, fat, and carb intake. This program allows you to add your own foods and comes with a database of food already entered. One of the features of this program is to allow you to make modifications in your workout and diet and use it as an analysis  tool to see if your work and diet is working for you. The training section breaks down cardio and resistance training and you can fully update the section for your own workouts. One of the benefits of this software is it can be used as family software, where each family member can be given a user name and password for accessing their own personal information.

To begin you create a user on the left side of the screen. After you have created a user you have seven areas to choose from workout journal for weight training, aerobics journal for aerobic training, diet journal for keeping track of the foods consumed, supplement journal for keeping track of your vitamins, bodystats journal for keeping track of you body information, notejournal for making notes, and a progress journal for tracking your progress.

The workoutjournal tracks your resistance training and by clicking the button another window opens up giving you the option for the date, workout length, time whether am or pm. You then add your exercises the number of sets reps, and amount of weight used. This is good for tracking your resistance training over time and seeing your gains. Your standard resistance training exercises are listed so using a pull down menu the choose the exercise then add the number of reps and weights click add and you information is transferred into you journal. The workout journal does not do calories burn calculations.

The aerobics journal you select your day, choose am or pm and have the standard exercises of aerobics, biking, jogging, swimming, and walking to choose from or add your own. In journal you list the intensity, high, medium, or low, and distance. The length in minutes of the workout, plus warm up and cool down time. Under heart you list your heart rate and target heart rate. Under calories you list the calories burned, the program does not estimate the amount of calories burned for you.

The diet journal is where you enter your information for three meals, however you must add your snacks as part of the meals. After you enter your foods it will give you the number of total servings, calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates for the day. To choose a food you select the food, enter the servings and the information is transfered to your diet journal. There is an option to add you own foods, in my case being a vegetarian I ended up adding almost all my foods for the trial period.

The supplement journal you enter the type of supplement, data, dosage, times per day and days per week. The bodystats journal keeps track of your weight, body fat, upper arm, neck, thigh, waist, forearm, chest, and calf information. The note journal is for keeping notes. The progress journal gives you a run down on body fat, body weight, lean body mass, body measurements, aerobics, diet, and strength, You can view the information by chart or report.

Now the extras in the program include a body fat calculator using calipers to measure your bodyfat. 1 Rep Max Calculator for getting a theoretical 1 rep max total weight lifting capacity. RoutineBuilder Coach that gives you advice on general fitness, weight loss, weight gain, strength, and endurance. Exercise Info brings up information on exercise and how to perform the exercises.

Like Calorie King's Diet Diary you do not have the option to track sodium or cholestrial content in the foods.

Calorie King Diet Diary (CKDietDiary) a program that runs on the Macintosh and Windows environment for tracking your dietary needs and available for a 15 day trial period with the cost as of August 2004 for $19.95 provides a deeper look into nutrition and a very worthwhile program for someone looking to learn more about nutrition. This program is a food and exercise diary, the food section gives you your calories, fat, protein, and carbs, while the exercise diary allows you to see your progression as you are becoming more physically fit. There is also an on-line version you can join at their website for the same price, and offers other membership benefits but I have not tried only read about on their website.

The Desktop Diet Diary program is a food, exercise, and weight monitor program. You answer a few short questions at set up time, the program then calculates your needs. You can easily set your nutritional targets for energy, fat, protein, carbs, and fiber or use the ones the program generates for you. Under the check in section your can enter your weight, measurements (chest, waist, hip, thigh), and make a journal entry. The program on the left displays your current BMI and weight. The journal entry is fo keeping a daily journal and the program calculates your BMI as you lose or gain weight.

Your main screen is your food and exercise diary. Using foods listed on the right side you use your mouse to make a selection, enter the amount for the food, and choose which category to put it under such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks. Under snacks you only have one entry so all of your days snacks go under the snack category. So if you have three snacks, they will be listed as one snack. The database is one of the largest databases I have come across but if a food is not listed in the database you have the ability to add your own foods under my foods category. This is good for foods not listed in the database or for you own recipes. When adding a food you include the name of the food, serving name, energy, fat, protein, carbs, and fiber content.  Under saved meals you can make meals that you may have regularly and put them under saved meals for quicker food entering. This is good if you have the same breakfast everyday, instead of re-entering the data each day, you just select your meal under saved meals at it will put it in the right category such as in this case breakfast. You can also type in a food in the search area to find a food quickly too.

On the left side of the screen is where you will see you foods listed, calories totals for each meal, and snacks, protein, fat, cabs, and fiber. On the lower left side of the screen your will see a bar chart with your daily totals  along with how far you are progressing towards you daily totals for calories, fat, carbs, fiber, and protein.

The exercise part offers a database on the right side to choose for a range of different exercise, you enter the duration, it calculates the calories and adds it to the left side of your screen under exercise. Just like the food section you can add your own exercise programs under my exercises.

The final feature of the main page is you water counter for tracking your water intake. Using the menu chart button will bring up the charts area for break down, nutrient, and weight chart. Under the breakdown chart you have a nice pie chart for the current day on the left side and a running breakdown for an overall 7 day period. The pie chart displays fa, protein, and carbohydrates. In the middle of the screen at the bottom you have a text daily average for the past 7 days that includes energy gained through foods, energy burnt through exercise, net energy, fat, carbs, and protein.

Nutrient Chart is a bar chart for displaying your energy intake, energy burned, energy net, fat, fiber, protein, carbohydrates for the period of a week, fortnight, or month.  You Weight Chart is for tracking you week over a period of time such as a week, fortnight, month, quarter, and year.

This program can be used off line or you can use the Internet to set up a meal plan but for this review the program was used entirely off line. The program is easy to use, offers a large food data base, and you can easily track your progress with the easy to view charts making it very easy for someone just starting out to use this program. More experience users will also find this program beneficial especially someone who is training and working on keeping within a certain fat gram range and eating enough protein if you are a vegetarian. Also this is one of the few programs that has a good size database for vegetarians, and many of the major brands are listed making it easy to use the program instead of having to enter in every food you eat because none of your vegetarian items are listed.

Now what I considered missing in this program was the ability to track you cholestrial and sodium intake since both of these are very important as part of a healthy lifestyle program. For the price this program offers a quick and easy way to enter your diet and exercise information, and track your progress with a variety of charts, and the ability to make personalized journal notes so you can better keep track at how you a progressing.

Final closing, if you are interested in keeping track of fat, carbs, fiber, protein, and calories and do not need a listing for vitamin content, sodium, and cholestrial, you might want to download a free trial of this program and see what it can do for you.
