Indian coins. Located at 361/B Rabindra Sarani it is open every weekday from 11 am to 1 pm. |

premises of the Kolkata University. Established in 1937, it has interesting pieces of Bengal art.

Asiatic Society
|
| The Asiatic Society was
founded by Sir William Jones in 1784 with Warren Hastings as its first patron.
Conviniently located at 1 Park Street, Kolkata 700016, this institution is a famous
centre of Indology, Literature and Scientific Research. Its
library contains about 20000 volumes including about 8000 rare Sanskrit,
Arabic, Persian and Hindi manuscripts. |

| Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

| Located at the Junction
of Gurusaday Road and Ballygaunj road the Birla Industrial and
Technological Museum was established in 1966. It is a place
ideally suited for students and research scholars for learning modern
science and technology. One with an interest with science and technology
should make a trip to this place as a permanent exhibition of products
are displayed.
This museum is closed

Agro-Horticultural Gardens
|
| Situated very near to
Alipore Zoo, this place has a huge collection of plants and flowers.
Flower lovers will be charmed to visit this place as the variety of
flowers and plants found here is a treat to the eyes. Founded by William Carey in 1820.

Netaji Indoor Stadium
|
| Adjacent to the near Eden
Gardens this is a fully air-conditioned stadium was built for holding indoor games
and concerts. Apart from the International Table-tennis
Tournament which was held in the seventies, many overnight concerts have
been held over here by famous singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle,
Md. Rafi and Kishore Kumar. |

Marble Palace
|
| This is one of the
landmarks situated on the Central Avenue now known as Chitta Ranjan Avenue in
north Kolkata. The palace was built in 1835 and as the name suggests
its walls and floors are built with marbles. Belonging to rich Jamindar
(Land Baron) of yesteryears, there are large collections of antiques,
marble statues, paintings and also floor to ceiling mirrors. The place
also has a private zoo.

| Nehru Children's Centre
|
| Built during the late sixties/early seventies. This Centre hums with
children's activities. Has a huge library for children, besides adaptation
of Indian classics in clay models. Located on J L Nehru Road. |

Rabindrabharati Museum
|
| The Museum concentrates on the Bengal renaissance of the nineteenth
century. Situated near Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue. It is open from
10.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays (1.30 pm on Saturdays) and is accessible by
any bus going northwards along Chittaranjan Avenue to the Girish Park Bus
Stop.
Rabindrabharati
museum is situated near Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue. This museum
remindsus of the Bengal renaissance of the nineteenth century. This
museum is open on weekdays from 10amto 5pm and on Saturdays till 1.30pm.
Ravindra Gallery
houses some of the rare and good pictures and manuscripts of Rabindra
Nath Tagore. The paintings which are in the museum are also done in
Rabindra style and becomes the attraction of many curious visitors. This
place is also the venue for many cultural programs and events. Lalit
Kala academy is also located here. |

| Maidan / Fort William |
|
After
the battle of Plassey in 1756, the British East India Company decided upon
replacing the original Fort William in order to face further attacks.
Accordingly, the foundation was laid down in the year 1758 and the construction
was completed in 1781. A wide maidan (open space) in front of it so that the
guns could have an easy firing range. This huge
green expanse stretches 3 km north to south and is over 1 km wide.
The
fort is still in use to the present day and has been well preserved but visitors
are only allowed inside with special permission.
The
maiden has cricket and football fields tennis courts and ponds. One can see
numerous trees grazing cows strollers and even political meetings to add to
list.

Industrial & Technological Museum |
| Situated at 19A Gurusday Rd is the
Birla
Industrial & Technological Museum open
daily except Monday from 10 am to 5 pm. There is also the Birla
Academy of Art & Culture at 109 Southern Ave, open daily except
Monday from 4 to 8 pm. It has a good collection of sculpture and modern art. The
huge Birla-built Radha Krishna Temple is just
around the corner from the Industrial & Technological
Museum. |

| Nakhoda
Mosque |
North of the BBD
Bagh, this is
Kolkatas
principal Muslim place of worship. Built in 1926, the huge Nakhoda Mosque is
said to accommodate 10,000 people and was modelled on Akbars tomb at Sikandra
near Agra.
The red sandstone mosque has two 46m minarets and
a brightly painted onion-shaped dome. Out-side the mosque, every day except
Sunday, you can buy attar, which is perfume made from essential oils and flower
fragrances. |

| Parshwanath
Jain Temple |
| This temple, in the north-east of the city, was
built in 1867 and dedicated to Sheetalnathji, the 10th of the 24 Jain
tirthankars. The temple is an ornate mass of mirrors, coloured stones and glass
mosaics. It overlooks a garden, and is open daily from 6 to 11.30 am and 3 to 7
pm. |
