   Birla Planetorium


Located at the crossing of Shakespeare Sarani and J L Nehru road, is the Birla Planetarium. The circular structure depicts pure India architecture but the huge dome at the centre is an imitation of Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi. The 
capacity of 500.  Opened

on the year 1961 this is one of the earliest planetarium in India. There is also a library adjacent to the auditorium and has large collection books, magazines, maps and other astronomical documents. Except Monday, daily programmes in English, Bengali and Hindi from 12 noon to 7 pm are conducted. Within few minutes of watching the show, one will definitely feel as if lying down under the night sky gazing at the stars, planets and other solar bodies while a explains guides narater explains.

                                                               Eden Garden


Moving toward the north-west of the maidan there is nicely laid out green expanse with pools within and called the Eden Gardens. Two sisters related to the Governor General, Lord Auckland conceived the idea to create a Biblical style garden of Eden in 1840. The sprawling expanse was planted with beautiful trees and shrubs around an artificial

lake and winding walk paths. A tiny Burmese pagoda was brought from Prome in Burma in after the British victory in the Burmese war and placed alongside the lake forming an excellent picturesque. 

A stadium was later built adjacent to the garden which presently has a seating capacity of more than a lakh. This is the world famous Eden Garden of Kolkata which hold all the international cricket matches. This is one of the first floodlight stadium in India where Day and Night Cricket was played.
Very close to the Eden Garden flows the Hoogly river and one can leisurely go in for a walk breathing the fresh air of the river.

                Science City



A drive of about 45 minutes will take you to the express way of Kolkata called the Metropolitan Bypass. Situated at the junction of Park Circus and Garia connector and a pollution free expanse, is a large complex with a huge tomb like

structure called the Science City visible from a very long distance. This is the only science theatre of India where science combined with high technology has been utilized for amusement and entertainment.  Set amidst trees and lush green lawns it is an open air Science Park which adds new dimension to teaching and education through amusement in an outdoor setting. Following are a few exhibits worth mentioning: 

Space Theatre - This is first of its kind outside Japan  which combines Astrovision and Universum to bring an unique experience. In this facility you can enjoy an extremely thrilling experience of sailing through the outer space with celestial bodies around or an adventure packed journey through the Serengeti Reserve Forest in Africa surrounded by wild animals.  

Time Machine - Experience a simulated journey to the ancient day by going back in time crossing the time-gate. 

Apart from the above two major attractions, there are Dynamotion exhibiting large variety of interactive physics, chemistry and mechanics models,  Energy Ball which is a large exhibit displaying the principle of conservation of energy. 

You can also see Huge moving models of Dinosaurs, a large Aquarium, Butterfly corner, Spinning Platform and a Dancing Fountain which is displayed in the evening.  There is also a cable car ride across the entire park. Being a bit away from the city, there are ample facilities for refreshment and a wide laws for a mini picnic.

                                                           Royal Turf Club


As per history the first recorded racing venue was Acra located near Garden Reach which is far away from the main City. The venue was shifted near to the maidan way back around 1819 and presently one of the largest race courses in the country. Kolkata Race course is one 

of the oldest and hold most prestigious Queen Elizabeth Cup and Kolkata Derby.

             Vidyasagar Setu


Vidyasagar Setu or the Second Hooghly Bridge was inaugarated in the year 1992 and has 9 lanes with a combined capacity of carrying 90,000 vehicles a day. It has been named after son of the soil India's great Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. 

It is considered to be a engineering marvel and is the largest cable bridge of Asia. It has been built to ease the traffic load off the Howrah Bridge which is the major traffic carrier across the river Hooghly. This magnificent cable bridge offers a panoramic view of the Kolkata skyline and connects the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah.

                                                                Nicco Park 


Situated at Salt Lake the Nicco Park it the called as the Disneyland of Kolkata. This amusement park provides variety of recreation and amusement and one can spend the entire day in it. The River Cave ride

is a major attraction of this park. There are also roller coaster, cable car, boating complex and a toy train circling around the park. 

It stretches across a huge area and has a sprawling lush green lawn and a garden of Japanese style. There are refreshment facilities and food is not allowed to be carried from outside The Park is open to the public from 1000 am to 800 pm everyday.

          Botanical Garden


Botanical Garden is situated about 10 Kms. from Kolkata across the Western bank of the river Hooghly and offers a excellent place to spend a leisurely day and along with picnic. The best way to reach is by taking a ferry ride across the river. It has been founded by Col. lexander Kyd of the East India Company in the year 1787  and laid a huge area covering  approximately 273 acres.  The largest and oldest of its

kind in India and second largest in the world next to Royal Botanical Garden of Kew in England, its prime attraction is a 200 year old Banyan Tree. It has a circumference of around 382 m with 600 aerial roots twisting around from the tree and reaching the ground.   There are more than 30,000 varieties of trees and plants and rarest kinds from Java, Sumatra and Brazil are also found here. There is an orchid house and huge Mahogany and Cuban Palms. It is said that the tea crops which is now cultivated in Assam and Darjeeling was first grown and developed at this garden.

The garden is open to public from 700 am to 500 pm.

                                                           Howrah Bridge


Earlier the river Hooghly was crossed by pontoon bridge which had to be opened to let the river traffic move. It was apprehended that this will cause hindrance to the river flow resulting in silt deposit. To avoid this problem a huge cantilever bridge was built that would cross the river in a single span of 450 meter with no

pylons at all within the river. It is considered to be an engineering marvel which completed in the year 1940. Coming to Kolkata by rail one has to cross the Howrah Bridge which is similar to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  Howrah Bridge  is considered to be the busiest bridge in the world carrying a daily stream of nearly 60,000 vehicles. During the morning and evening the bridge has maximum rush and it can take more 30 minutes to cross. People in a hurry are advisable to take ferries which runs below the bridge and gives a breathtaking view as you cross the river.

            Metro Railway


Metro Railway is India's first underground tube railway running through the heart of the city. It is a prized possession of connecting Tollygaunj at the southern end of the city to Dum Dum at the northern end covering a distance of around 16 Kms.

Its has 17 stations and takes approximate 45 minutes to travel from end to end which would have taken more than 2 hours on surface. It is a marvel of modern technology. A great aspect which will attract anybodies attention is the cleanliness.

                  Nandan


Located at the vicinity of the Victoria Memorial, Nandan is the cultural centre for film enthusiasts and professionals. It was established in September 2, 1985 and inaugurated by late Satyajit Roy. It has three motion picture

motion picture screening facilities and considered to be one of the best in Kolkata. Other facilities available over  here are its own library and a museum in the name of Satyajit Roy. You will find huge collection of books about films. The main attraction of Nandan is Satyajit Roy Archives where one will find his film records, camera, cigar-pipes and various awards he received during his glorious tenure. If anybody wishes to see art and good films classical one should find out what is currently being screened at Nandan. The renowned ones like - Zurassic Park, Elizabeth and Bengali classics like Pather Panchali, Padma Nadir Majhi, Meghe Dhaka Tara have been screened.

      Kolkota Zoo 


The Zoological Garden of Kolkata was the opened in 1876 by Prince of Wales and one of the biggest Zoological Gardens of India. It is spread across approximate 16 hectares of land and houses a larges species of animals, birds, snakes and reptiles. The small lake at the centre of 

the Zoo invites a large amount of migratory birds during the winter.  The 16 hectare grounds house a wide species of animals & birds including the rare white Bengal Tiger. There is a separate reptile house and a children's zoo. Migratory birds find sanctuary on a small lake in the zoo every winter. The gardens are open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily The special attraction of the Zoo is the famous Royal Bengal Tiger and white tiger.
