Birla Planetorium |

Located at the crossing of Shakespeare Sarani and J L Nehru road, is the
Birla Planetarium. The circular structure depicts pure India architecture
but the huge dome at the centre is an imitation of Buddhist Stupa at
Sanchi. The

1961 this is one of the earliest planetarium in India. There is also a
library adjacent to the auditorium and has large collection books,
magazines, maps and other astronomical documents. Except Monday, daily
programmes in English, Bengali and Hindi from 12 noon to 7 pm are
conducted. Within few minutes of watching the show, one will definitely
feel as if lying down under the night sky gazing at the stars, planets and

Eden Garden |

Moving toward
the north-west of the maidan there is nicely laid out green expanse with
pools within and called the Eden Gardens. Two sisters related to the
Governor General, Lord Auckland conceived the idea to create a Biblical
style garden of Eden in 1840. The sprawling expanse was planted with
beautiful trees and shrubs around an artificial

lake
and winding walk paths. A tiny Burmese pagoda was brought from Prome in
Burma in after the British victory in the Burmese war and placed alongside
the lake forming an excellent picturesque.
A stadium was later built adjacent to the garden which presently has a
seating capacity of more than a lakh. This is the world famous Eden Garden
of Kolkata which hold all the international cricket matches. This is one
of the first floodlight stadium in India where Day and Night Cricket was
played. Very close to the Eden Garden
flows the Hoogly river and one can leisurely go in for a walk breathing
the fresh air of the river.

A drive of about 45 minutes will take you to the express way of Kolkata

Apart from the above two major attractions, there are Dynamotion
exhibiting large variety of interactive physics, chemistry and mechanics
models, Energy Ball which is a large exhibit displaying the
principle of conservation of energy.
You can also see Huge moving models of Dinosaurs, a large Aquarium,
Butterfly corner, Spinning Platform and a Dancing Fountain which is
displayed in the evening. There is also a cable car ride across the
entire park. Being a bit away from the city, there are ample facilities
for refreshment and a wide laws for a mini picnic.

Botanical Garden is situated about 10 Kms. from Kolkata across the Western
bank of the river Hooghly and offers a excellent place to spend a

ferry ride across the river. It has been founded by Col. lexander Kyd of
the East India Company in the year 1787 and laid a huge area
covering approximately 273 acres. The largest and oldest of

and second largest in the world next to Royal Botanical Garden of Kew in
England, its prime attraction is a 200 year old Banyan Tree. It has a
circumference of around 382 m with 600 aerial roots twisting around from
the tree and reaching the ground. There are more than 30,000
varieties of trees and plants and rarest kinds from Java, Sumatra and
Brazil are also found here. There is an orchid house and huge Mahogany and
Cuban Palms. It is said that the tea crops which is now cultivated in
Assam and Darjeeling was first grown and developed at this garden.

Howrah Bridge |

Earlier the river Hooghly was crossed by pontoon bridge which had to be
opened to let the river traffic move. It was apprehended that this will

stream of nearly 60,000 vehicles. During the morning and evening the
bridge has maximum rush and it can take more 30 minutes to cross. People
in a hurry are advisable to take ferries which runs below the bridge and
gives a breathtaking view as you cross the river.

Metro Railway is India's first underground tube railway running through

The Zoological Garden of Kolkata was the opened in 1876 by Prince of Wales
and one of the biggest Zoological Gardens of India. It is spread across

invites a large amount of migratory birds during the winter. The
