ROADS OF MIDDLE EARTH

East-West Road Greenway North-South Road Old Forest Road Shire Road

The roads named here are those built by the Dúnedain early in the third age. However, these followed much older paths of Elves and Men, beginning with the route followed by the Elves as the wandered westward out of Cuiviénen.

East-West Road

Great East Road, Great West Road. The East-West Road runs from Mithlond in the east 650 miles to Imladris in the West. The King of Arnor had it paved from the Bridge of Stonebows on the Brandywine River to the Last Bridge on the Hoarwell River (Ruins of Armithel). From the Brandywine westward through The Shire the road is well maintained by the Hobbits, but it dwindles to an overgrown track west of the White Downs. Likewise, east of the Last Bridge the road is in poor repair, and its track is difficult to follow east of the Grayflood. From there, travelers must traverse the High Pass of the Misty Mountains, and join the Old Forest Road by crossing the Old Ford of the Anduin.

Greenway

The Greenway is a 200 mile section of the North-South Road between Bree in the north and the ruins of Tharbad on the Grayflood River. It is seldom used late in the Third Age due the the activity of highwaymen - hence the name "greenway" referring to its overgrown condition. The most dangerous section of the road is through a narrow pass between the Barrow Downs and the South Downs.

North-South Road

Old South Road. The Great Road runs from the ruins of Fornost in Northern Eriador 1100 miles southeastward to the ruins of Osgiliath on the Anduin River in Gondor. The road was paved from Fornost to Tharbad by the King of Arnor. At the end of the Third age, the sections most commonly used are the Greenway between Bree and Tharbad, and the Road of Anórian from Edoras to Minis Tirith. The road is abandoned and nearly impassible from Dunland to Ford of th Issen. The Great Road crosses the Grayflood at Tharbad, and the Issen River at its Ford.

Old Forest Road

This ancient Elven track stretches 250 miles from the Old Ford of the Anduin to the banks of the River Running in the East. From there, all travel is by the River Running either northward to Esgaroth on Long Lake or downriver to Rhûn.

Shire Road

Lûhn Road. This road runs from Mithlond 150 miles southeastward and joins the Greenway about 50 miles north of Tharbad. It became the primary North-South route in Eriador after highwaymen became active on the middle reach of the Greenway.
