The Animals (& Plants) Of Middle Earth Dragons, Eagles, and to a lesser extent wolves can communicate with humans. But Radgast the Brown, Tom Bombadil, and Beorn can communicate with all living things.

Arod

The small, fiery, light-colored horse of Rohan that Legolas rode and Gimli ride. At Dunharrow, he refused to pass into the Paths of the Dead until Legolas sang into his ears. He carries them to Minis Tirith, to Morannon, The Black Gate or Mordor, and after the fall of Sauron back to Isengard.

Asfaloth

Glorfindel's white horse that carried Frodo to Rivendale. Possibly the same horse Glorfindel rode against Angmar; i.e., like Glorfindel, undying even in the flesh (Ainur).

Bill the Pony

Sam's pony that travels with the company from Bree to the gates of Moria, where the "watcher" drives him away and shuts the company in. Bill then finds his way back to Bree and is waiting for Sam when he returns.

Dragons

Urulóki Created by Melkor to combat the Elves during the First Age. Reptilian creatures with claws, wings, long sharp teeth, and lots of very hard scales. Highly intelligent, speaking, fire breathing, gold hoarding, riddling, and evil to the core.
Now I am old and strong, strong, strong. . . . My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death! Smaug
The other evil creatures of Middle-earth are said to be corruptions of other beings, but Dragons are the original creations of Evil, although they seem to "match" the Eagles. Some could fly, some could not, some could breath fire and other could not. Morgoth's first dragon was Glaurung, who was driven off by the Elves upon his first attack, but after reaching great age, he became the most fearsome dragon of all time. At last he was killed by the warrior Túrin. At the end of the first age, the fire-drake Ancalagon defended Morgoth's realm from the attack of the Valar, but Eërendil slew him. Much later, in the 3rd age Smaug captured and held the realms of Erebor and Dale, keeping open the northlands to invasion by the allies of Sauron. He was slain by Bard the Bowman.

Eagles

The Eagles were a separate act of creation by Iluvitar that preceded the coming of Elves and Men. They are large enough to carry men. The outstretched wings of Thorondor, King of Eagles, spanned 180 feet. The Eagles lived high in the mountains, particularly in the North of Middle-earth. In Beleriand, their home was Crissaegrim. They were capable of speech, even common speech with Men. The Eagles were the emissaries of the god Manwë, and brought to him knowledge of the goings-on in Middle-earth. They also served him by bearing Men, Elves and Hobbits to safety, and by doing battle with Morgoth and his servants. At the end of the First Age, the eagles, lead by Throndor, aided Eärendil in the defeat of the flying dragons as Angband was thrown down and Morgoth defeated. In the second age, they were sent as the final warning before the destruction of Númenor. In the third age, they saved Bilbo and the Dwarves from the orcs, Gandalf from Isengard (Gwaihir), and Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom.

Fatty Lumpkin

Pony of Tom Bombadil. He is old, round, seldom ridden, and free to roam the hillside within Tom Bombadil's domain.

Firefoot

The horse of Éomer, Third Marshall of the Riddermark of Rohan.

Gwaihir

The Lord of Eagles. The "Wind-Lord" who carried Gandalf to safety twice, once from Orthanc after his capture by Saruman and later to Moria to rescue Frodo and Sam after the destruction of the ring.

Hasufel

The horse of Rohan ridden by Aragorn in pursuit of the Orcs who had captured Pippin and Merry. A great dark-gray animal.

Hurons

Tree-like beings intermediate between "normal" trees and Ents. Most trees are not sentient (but see Old Man Willow below), and Ents are so fully sentient that are listed as one of the Races. Hurons are intermediate, and can be motivated by the Ents, but ordinarily are quiet and tree-like.

Oliphant

(Mumakil) Theancestor of the Elephant, used in battle by the Southrons.
See "The Seige of Gondor" by Stephen Hickman at Rolozo Tolkein

Shadowfax

The greatest steed in Rohan at the time of the War of the Rings. Gandalf receives him as a gift from Théoden, who then greatly regrets the deed.
Does he not shine like silver, and run as smoothly as a swift stream? He has come for me: the horse of the White Rider. We are going to battle together. Gandalf
See "Gandalf and Shadowfax" by Ted Nasmith at Rolozo Tolkein

Shelob

A very large spider-like creature that inhabited the pass of Cirith Ungol. She was a descendant of Ungoliant the spider-like creature who was Melkor's accomplice in killing the two trees of Valinor. Shelob poisoned Frodo, but was driven off by Sam, who took up the One Ring, not realizing the Frodo was in a deep sleep.
See "Shelob" by John Howe at Rolozo Tolkein

Snowmane

The valiant steed of Théoden, but was his master's bane. Snowmane toppled on top of Théoden when the Nazgul came, killing Théoden.
    Faithful servant yet master's bane,
    Lighfoot's foal, swift Snowmane.
See "Theoden Espies The Serpent Banner" by Michael Kaluta at Rolozo Tolkein

Stybba

The pony Merry road from Helm's Deep to Dunharrow, then to Edoras.

Windfola

The horse ridden by Eowyn, as Dernhelm, and Merry to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Wargs

Intelligent, very large wolves - capable of simple speech. Formed by Melkor in the First Age. They were unreliable steeds of the Orcs, that sometimes devour their their companions.
See "The wargs had no intention of going away" by Alan Lee at Rolozo Tolkein

Watcher in the Water

A giant fresh water squid-type thing that guards the western door to Moria. It grabs Frodo outside the gates of Moria, then blocks the Fellowship's exit. Perhaps it was set there by Sauron, or the Ballrog.
See "The Watcher at the Gates" by Norman Pappas at Rolozo Tolkein

Old Man Willow

An evil tree growing beside the River Willywithel in the Old Forest. It captures and nearly kills the hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin), but Tom Bombadil saves them.
