Attorney General Alexander Mitchel Palmer
- His house was bombed by a socialist affiliated
man on June 2, 1919.
> That was a
prediction of a "May Day" attack by socialists
>> Palmer's response to both of these was to remove all of the socialists and
communists from the country
- He began by seizing suspected anarchists and communists and held them for deportation on
November 7, 1919
- He showed no regard for due process law.
- When news of unlawful arrests angered many law makers and Palmer had to explain his
actions to the House Rules Committee
> He denied
that any violence or unlawful actions had taken place.
- In 1921 Palmer was questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

John Edgar Hoover
He was head of the newly formed Anti-Radical Division
As soon as investigation began he had 150,000 names on the list, including about 30,000
names from American Communist movement, the Communist Labor Party and Communist Party of
America, who were all rivals.
