PAKISTAN SUGAR INDUSTRY HOME MATERIAL PROBLEMS

Problems of sugar industry:

Ø No government policy frame work

Ø Most of the industry holders are politicians

Ø Lack of proper storage facilities

Ø Lack of control in either surplus or in less growth

Ø Cost of raw material

Ø High financed cost

Ø Lack of infrastructure

Ø Old machineries are being used

Ø Heavy taxes

Ø Instable growth

Ø Formation of cartel prices by mill owners

Ø Shortage of water

Recommendations:

Ø The Government should facilitate improved varieties of sugar cane having higher sucrose recovery through Agriculture Research Institutes and more effective measures required for disease control and better pesticides used.

Ø Availability of adequate supply of water, appropriate use of fertilizer and proper spraying of insecticides & pesticides can improve yield per hectare.

Ø Gur production should be banned during the sugarcane crushing season so that maximum sugarcane is made available to sugar manufacturers.

Ø Improvement in procurement and storage to reduce wastages.

Ø Developments of Industries for proper utilization of by-products which can earn enhance revenues.

Ø Use sugar beet as a supplement to sugar cane for sugar production.
