Introduction:

Ø  The Sugar industry in Pakistan is the Second largest agro based industry after Textiles.

Ø  Pakistan is an important cane producing country and is ranked fifth in world cane acreage and 15th in sugar production.

Ø  It contributes 2% to GDP and 13% to the manufacturing sector.

Ø  Two third of the world sugar productive is made of sugarcane and remainder by sugar beet.

Ø  78 sugar mills operating in Pakistan.

History:

Ø  At the time of partition in 1947 only seven sugar mills, existed in the territories of Pakistan, 5 in East Pakistan now known as Bangladesh and only 2 in West Pakistan now known as Pakistan.

Ø  These two sugar mills namely Rahwali Sugar Mills and Frontier Sugar Mills established in 1936 and 1938 had a capacity of 5000 tons each of producing white sugar.

Ø  During 1954-56 three more sugar mills were established with a capacity of 10000-15000 tons.

Ø  By 1955-56, the sugar production capacity in Pakistan was around 45,000 tons.

Ø  Keeping in view the importance of sugar industry, government setup a (PSMA) commission in 1957 to frame scheme for the development of sugar industry.

Ø  During the year 1997-1998 there were 75 sugar mills in the country and it produces 2.4 million metric tons sugar.

Ø  Sugarcane is grown on over a million hectares and provides the raw material for Pakistan’s 77 sugar mills.

Ø  Dewan Sugar Mills Limited established as a public limited company in 1982 is one of the largest sugar mills of Pakistan having a cane crushing capacity of over 9,000tons per day.

Ø  Apart from the four mills located in the North West Frontier Province which are based on sugar beet, all others use sugar canes the raw material.

Number of sugar industries:

Ø  Before 2006 there were 74 sugar industries were working in Pakistan, out of which 38 were in Punjab, 30 were in Sindh and 6 were in N.W.F.P.

Ø  According to 2006 there were 77 industries out of which 76 are in Pakistan and one was in Kashmir.

Ø  According to 2007 there are currently 16 extra industrial persons they have applied for license but government issues license to only 6 industrial persons.
