STRESS
- Don't let it be a part of you!
Our work, our
frustrations, our problems. All these take a toll on our life. At
some point of time, problems of everyday life bog us down, and affect
our quality of life, and as a result, our relationships or our health
suffers.
Sometimes
it's very easy to make stress a part of your Life : I know this
person who was so used to stress, that it slowly became an essential
part of her Life! A limited amount of stress is good, because it
makes us work better. But then when the stress becomes too much,
and too regular in your life, it is important to find out why. You
might be addicted to stress, which then makes you as much a victim
as does alcohol or drugs!!
Whenever
you feel stressed out, ask yourself these important questions:
1.Am
I over-reacting or is the situation really as bad as it seems? (After
a little introspection, you will realize that Things are never as
bad as they seem!)
2.
What can I do to help it? Is it under my control? Remember that
you are not always in control of your life. It helps to realize
that although a lot of things that happen in your life are under
your control, there are still many others that are not! It's best
you differentiate between the two, and where you realize that you
cannot help things anyway, learn to relax!
3.
Is this worth it getting stressed about? Is it more important to
me than my emotional well being? Funny, isn't it, how much we bargain
when it comes to buying clothes, vegetables etc, that contribute
to our physical well-being, and end up getting such a bad bargain
for our mental happiness? (We get stress in return!!!-- A very bad
deal indeed!)
4.
Am I being practical? Perhaps there's a way out, and you're too
stressed out worrying about it, that you don't realize it. We live
in a fast-paced world where stress won't help. Reason and logic
will.
Your
me- time : I would also strongly advise you to spend some time
( to misquote, "of yourself, by yourself, and for yourself"!)
alone once in a while. Spending time by yourself means freedom from
work and family problems atleast for that period of time, so you
can concentrate on doing things you actually like. Like Meditation
or yoga . Or if you're religious, praying. Perhaps talking to a
close friend, writing letters, or looking at old albums and reliving
the past.
Music
helps : Remember that Lata Mangeshkar tape you always wanted
to listen to but never had the time? Well, it's high time you brought
it out of the closet and listened to it now!!! Music could be just
what your body and mind need.. You could have your Walkman on whenever
you get an opportunity, like, say, when you are working in the kitchen,
or travelling by bus.
Laughter
is certainly the best medicine: Do you remember the last time
you had a really good laugh? If you don't, or if it happened five
years ago, then it's time to really inject a little humour into
your life. Here's a useful tip: Think of a very hilarious moment
that happened in your life, like the time when your little daughter
asked you that very embarassing question loudly in public. And remember
this incident whenever you start feeling stressed. I guarantee you
will break out into a smile, and the stress will vanish!!
A
Balanced Diet and Exercise : A healthy and regular, balanced
diet pattern goes a long way in detoxicating your body. The mind
and body have a strong relationship-- That's why your physical and
mental well- being are so inter-dependant.
Exercise
You're probably thinking " There's that hateful
word again!". But really, once you start to exercise, you will
know what I mean. Perhaps the first two days (if you're not used
to it) you will find it exhausting, but from the third day onwards,
I assure you (from personal experience) that you will find yourself
possessing a new energy with a kind of a feel-good-inside emotion.
Realize
that you're lucky : Remember that nobody has it easy in this
world. That reminds me of one of my favourite quotes: "Be kind.
For everyone you meet is fighting a tougher battle."And that
is the ultimate truth. Learn to see your Life in perspective. There's
always someone who's had a worse day that what you've had. Someone
who will never see light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe you're
stressed out because your work is hectic--that is understandable.
But learn to derive joy in the strengths of your family and loved
ones. Realize that there are countless many in this world who have
grown up not knowing what love is all about.
