Runty is a spotted slate/black gerbil, born on my first ever gerbil litter. She was born on February 28 to Martina and Kuzco. She had a rough start in life. First, when I saw the litter, I thought she was dead. She was buried in the litter, apart from the other two babies and not moving. When I went to take her out, Kuzco took her and put her back on the nest and she moved! About 1-2 days after they were born, I noticed that she had a broken arm. I watched them closely and she was falling behind, and not able to nurse very well. She would squeak for half an hour while the other two were nursing. I decided to get some KMR and supplement her. I took her out after Martina was done nursing, and gave her some KMR. After a while, she was still hanging in there... but not as big as her brother and sister. And then, one day I saw something amazing. Martina was nursing and I could hear Runty squeaking. I looked into the cage to see Kuzco go to Martina and take both Porto and Phoebe to another corner of the cage and lied with there, leaving Martina and Runty alone. With her brother and sister gone, Runty had a better chance to feed. So, in part, Kuzco saved her too. 8) Now, she has a locked paw, due to the fracture she had at an early age, but still, she's the dominant girl in her clan. She lives with 3 other girls, Flo, Phoebe and Bermuda.
