The Federated States of Micronesia, in the Western Pacific Ocean, became a
republic on 10 May, 1979. It was formerly part of the U.S. Trust Territory
of the Pacific Islands. The States comprise Kosrae, Pohnpei (formerly
Ponape), Chuuk (formerly Truk), and Yap, with the capital, Kolonia, located
on the island of Pohnpei. The population is predominantly Micronesian and
English is the official language, but the indigenous languages are
Austronesian and Polynesian tongues. Germany purchased the islands from
Spain in 1898. They were occupied by Japan in 1914, which received them
as a League of Nations mandate in 1920. In 1947 they became part of the
U.S. trust territory. The islands cover an area of 271 sq mi (702 sq km)
and have a population of 127,616 (1997). The islands are located north of
Australia and east of Hawaii.
