Palau or, officially, the Republic of Palau, is located in the Western
Pacific Ocean consists of c.200 small islands of which Babelthuap (the
largest and future site of the capital) and Koror (the present capital)
are the most important. Most of the population is Micronesian and Palauan
is the official language, but English is also spoken. The islands cover
192 sq mi (497 sq km) and have a population of 16,500 (1994) The islands
are located north of Australia and east of Hawaii and at the extreme
western end of the Caroline Islands.
